CHICAGO - Dan Lanning didn’t hide where he stands on the future of Oregon’s in-state rivalry.
With the Ducks and Oregon State set to renew their series in 2028 after a two-year break, Oregon’s coach made it clear he’s glad the matchup is coming back.
“I think rivalry games matter,” Lanning said during the second day of Big Ten Media Days at the downtown Hilton Chicago.
The series had been in limbo after Oregon left the Pac-12 in 2023 to join the Big Ten, a move that complicated the long-running matchup with the Beavers. The teams still met in nonconference play in 2023, 2024 and 2025, and Oregon won last season’s game 41-7.
The broader Pac-12 shakeup, which included the departure of 10 programs, gave Oregon a bigger edge over Oregon State in recruiting and NIL. That gap helped produce the lopsided results of the past three seasons, a sharp change from Oregon State’s wins in 2020 and 2022.
For a while, it wasn’t even clear whether the series would continue. The original plan was to skip just one season and pick things back up in 2027, the first one-year pause since 1944. But in February, that break stretched to two seasons.
Then in June, the schools announced the rivalry would return in 2028, with four games scheduled through 2032.
“It’s a game that we’d love to see continue for as long as possible,” Lanning said.
He also pointed to the practical side of keeping Oregon State on the schedule. With Big Ten travel demanding so much from his team, an in-state road trip carries real value.
Oregon’s schedule this season includes a nonconference trip to Oklahoma State, followed by conference road games at USC, Illinois, Ohio State and Michigan State.
The Ducks usually play five road games in a season, so having one of them in nearby Corvallis can help ease the burden.
“I also think with the travel that exists in the Big Ten that it makes a lot of sense for us to challenge ourselves to have games that can be close at times and Oregon State makes sense there,” Lanning said.
Oregon leads the rivalry 70-49-10.
