Boise State will head into Saturday’s game at Colorado State missing three important offensive pieces, and the biggest name on that list is quarterback Maddux Madsen.
Madsen was officially ruled out in the Broncos’ final Week 10 player availability report, released Saturday afternoon. No.
25 Boise State, sitting at 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-12, is set to play Colorado State at 4 p.m. Mountain time at Canvas Stadium.
Backup quarterback Max Cutforth will make the start, stepping in after helping rescue Boise State last week. Cutforth came on for an injured Madsen in the fourth quarter against Texas State and helped spark three fourth-quarter touchdowns in the Broncos’ 46-45 comeback win.
Madsen’s injury came late in that one, when Boise State was trailing 39-28 and he appeared to injure his left knee in the fourth quarter. He had initially been listed as questionable on the Broncos’ Week 10 availability report.
On Friday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Madsen would miss the Colorado State game and aim to return next week against Oregon State (5-3, 3-1).
Boise State coach Spencer Danielson said Monday that Madsen had an MRI and avoided any major damage. He was listed as day-to-day. Danielson also said Thursday that Madsen was out at practice “but wasn’t able to do a lot.”
“We’re still going to see what that is all the way up until kickoff,” Danielson told local media after Thursday’s practice. “(Cutforth) has done a really good job this week. … Cash Herrera has done a really good job as the No. 2 quarterback, and our offense has continued to find ways to grow and improve.”
Danielson said he would still consider starting Madsen even after the limited practice time.
“With who Maddux is, I mean he’s one of the most brilliant quarterbacks we’ve had here,” Danielson said. “So it’s something we’re going to continue to work through as a staff.
I think the world of Maddux, but it’s all about ‘Can he take care of himself? Can he make the plays he needs to make?’
And that’s what we’re still working through.”
Boise State’s offense will also be without starting left guard Carson Rasmussen and No. 2 running back Sire Gaines.
Gaines has already missed two games this season with a wrist injury and sat out the Texas State game because of an undisclosed lower body injury. In five games, he has 75 carries for 418 yards and five total touchdowns.
Rasmussen is set to miss his fifth straight game after suffering an undisclosed injury against Western Michigan on Sept. 26. Colorado State, meanwhile, enters the matchup giving up 42.4 points and 526.4 yards per game, both numbers that rank No. 138 out of 138 FBS teams.

Oregon States Rebuilt Roster Is Sending An Early Message
A rebuilt Oregon State roster is already looking more comfortable than most teams do this early in November. The Beavers rolled past Cal Baptist 96-68, using a balanced attack and a fast tempo to keep control from start to finish, while Legend Smiley paced the offense with 21 points. The win pushed Oregon State to 2-0 and offered an early glimpse of how quickly a group with so many new faces and a new coaching staff can come together.
What stood out just as much was the way the Beavers mixed perimeter volume with efficiency inside, then kept finding clean looks in the paint. Oregon State shot 78.8% from inside the arc, a sign that the movement and spacing are already translating into real production. For a team still building its identity, the early returns suggest the pieces are fitting together faster than expected, even if the bigger tests are still ahead. [Read more 🡒]
Oregon States Fast Start Is Giving Beavers Fans Real Reason To Believe
Oregon States early-season momentum kept rolling with a convincing 96-68 win over Cal Baptist, a result that gave the Beavers another comfortable night and pushed them to 2-0. Legend Smiley set the tone offensively, while Josiah Lake, Deshawn Gory and Xavion Staton all chipped in to give the Beavers a balanced scoring night and a little more evidence that this group can spread the load.
For a program looking to build confidence early, the more encouraging part may be how quickly Oregon State has settled in on both ends of the floor. The Beavers have already shown they can put teams away, and the next test comes against Eastern Washington, where they will get another chance to see whether this fast start is the beginning of something more than just a promising opening week. Braden Atkinson Puts Oregon States Response In The Spotlight
After a pair of recent losses, Oregon State gets a chance to steady itself at home against Texas State in a Pac-12 matchup that should bring plenty of offense. The Beavers have leaned heavily on quarterback Braden Atkinson all season, and he has been one of the most productive passers in the country while keeping Oregon State in the thick of games even when the results have not gone its way.
The bigger question now is how the Beavers respond when the pressure shifts from piling up numbers to turning those drives into a needed win. Oddsmakers are pointing toward another high-scoring afternoon, which fits both teams recent profile, but Oregon State will be looking for more than a shootout - it needs a cleaner finish after the stumble that led into this one.
