Big 12 Just Sent Oklahoma State's New-Look Offense A Loud Message

In a standout preseason recognition for Oklahoma State, Drew Mestemaker and Wyatt Young emerge as key figures in the Big 12 spotlight.

Oklahoma State got a little preseason recognition on Monday, and it came in two familiar places: at quarterback and at wide receiver.

Drew Mestemaker was voted the Big 12’s Preseason Newcomer of the Year, while Wyatt Young landed on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team. Both arrive in Stillwater after starring together at North Texas, and both are expected to be central pieces for the Cowboys.

Mestemaker’s 2024 season at North Texas was the kind that gets a league’s attention fast. He led the country in passing with 4,379 yards and 34 touchdowns against nine interceptions.

It was his first full run as a starting quarterback in a while, after playing safety as a high schooler. He was also named the American’s Offensive Player of the Year, and his big-game résumé included five outings of more than 300 passing yards.

The biggest number on the page: 608 yards and a score-filled day against Charlotte.

Young was right there with him last season as Mestemaker’s top target. The sophomore wideout caught 70 passes for 1,264 yards and 10 touchdowns at UNT, and he piled up five 100-yard games. His biggest explosion came against Rice, when he went for 295 yards and two touchdowns.

The Big 12’s preseason team featured a strong Oklahoma State connection through Young, and it also included a former Cowboy in Kansas State edge rusher Wendell Gregory. Gregory was one of the few bright spots for Oklahoma State last season, finishing with 27 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Big 12 Media Days are set for this week, and Mestemaker will be there with teammates Caleb Hawkins, Ethan Wesloski and Jaleel Johnson. Oklahoma State is scheduled to take the stage Tuesday.

Oregon States QB Uncertainty Has Put One Newcomer In The Spotlight

Braden Atkinson arrived at Oregon State with a rsum that suggested he could at least make the quarterback conversation interesting, and he has done exactly that through spring camp. The 3-star transfer from Mercer was sharp with his accuracy and decision-making, the same traits that made him a standout at the FCS level and helped him earn the Jerry Rice Award last season.

For the Beavers, the bigger question is whether that production can carry over against FBS competition. Atkinson is still fighting to prove he belongs in the same discussion as the other contenders, and the staff is not expected to rush a decision, which leaves the job open long enough for every practice rep to matter a little more. Ish Findlayter Is Suddenly In Oregon States D-Line Mix

Ish Findlayter arrived at Oregon State as one of the more intriguing additions to the defensive line room, and spring camp only added to that sense. The Duquesne transfer got limited chances to be fully evaluated, but he still stood out for the way he moved for his size, a promising sign for a player who is still relatively new to the position after originally coming in on the other side of the ball.

Findlayters path has been unconventional, and that is part of what makes his fit worth watching as the Beavers head toward the fall. After a productive season at Duquesne, he now enters a defensive line rotation that should have opportunities available, and Oregon State will spend the next few months finding out how quickly his athletic traits translate into real snaps when the games start to count.
