AJ Newberry Just Added To A Breakout Beavers Performance

Despite narrowly missing a national award, AJ Newberry's record-breaking performance is propelling Oregon State's impressive season.

Oregon State running back AJ Newberry got national recognition on Tuesday afternoon after his big day against Washington State earned him one of 10 honorable mentions for The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award National Player of the Week for the seventh week of the college football season.

Newberry was a major reason the Beavers rolled past the Cougars 48-30 in Corvallis. He handled 11 carries for 105 rushing yards and added five receptions for 120 yards and a touchdown through the air, turning in a rare all-around performance. In the process, the transfer from Vanderbilt became the first Oregon State player in more than 20 years to top 100 yards both rushing and receiving in the same game.

“He played hard. He played like he was frustrated, and wanted to find a way to play better for this football team,” head coach JaMarcus Shephard said postgame of his running back.

“I always want our guys to have a little chip on their shoulders, and he does. I just told him 'thank you for trusting us.'

You know,he could've went to a lot of other schools and decided to come here. And you know what, he played really really well today. Tonight it was a special experience watching him play the game that way.”

The award recognition fits with what Newberry has done so far this season. Through Oregon State’s first seven games, he has rushed 65 times for 431 yards, an average of 6.6 yards per carry, and three touchdowns. He has also been a factor in the passing game with 24 catches for 288 yards and another score.

Newberry’s eligibility for the award lines up with the honor’s requirements, since he is a native of Grand Prairie, Texas and a graduate of South Grand Prairie High School. Players considered for the award must have played football and graduated from a Texas high school, and/or be playing at a four-year Division I Texas college.

Oregon State is off to a 5-2 start and has won five straight. The Beavers have averaged 527 yards per game during that stretch, a figure that ranks among the top five in FBS. Their bye week comes this weekend, and they will return to action on Saturday, October 31, when they travel to Fresno State.

Oregon States Revamped Roster Just Sent An Early Message

Oregon States first public look at its revamped roster came in an exhibition that told a lot about where the Beavers might be headed this season. Pac-12 basketball is back after a two-year hiatus, and while several West Coast programs have been using exhibition play to settle in, the Beavers made an immediate statement by pushing the reigning national champions deeper than expected.

There was enough there to suggest this group can hang with high-level competition right away, even before the stakes start counting. The performance was part of a broader opening stretch for the league, with Boise State getting strong play from its returning guards and Utah State showing its own depth, but Oregon States near miss felt especially notable because it came against one of the toughest possible early tests. Boise States Playoff Grip Suddenly Looks Less Comfortable

Boise State still sits in the drivers seat among the Group of Six contenders for a College Football Playoff spot, but the picture around that race has gotten a little less settled. DraftKings Sportsbook still gives the Broncos the edge, even as James Madison has trimmed the gap after its recent win, and Boise State coach Spencer Danielson has kept the message simple by stressing daily performance over playoff positioning. For now, the focus stays on the next assignment, with Washington State up next and Boise State listed as a 13.5-point favorite.

For Oregon State, the broader playoff conversation is no longer something to ignore. The Beavers have climbed sharply in DraftKings odds, moving from +6500 two weeks ago to +1200, which is enough to make them one of the more interesting long-shot teams to track as the season turns. Their trip to Boise State on Nov. 14 carries plenty of weight beyond the immediate matchup, and it could wind up carrying even more importance if the Pac-12 race keeps tightening around it. Donovan Woods Is Back With Oklahoma State In A New Role

Donovan Woods is back around Oklahoma State athletics in a new capacity, giving the former Cowboy defensive back another chance to shape the program from the business side. Woods played at OSU from 2004 to 2007, and his return comes with the kind of institutional familiarity that often matters in fundraising and alumni engagement.

Woods will work with the OSU Foundation, where he has experience already, and his role will center on building support for the athletic department and taking care of the relationships that help keep the whole enterprise moving. For a program that leans on donor energy as much as on-field results, bringing back a familiar name with that background is a notable move. [Read more 🡒]
