USC Lurks As Legendary QB Seeks HC Job

Russell Wilson, retired NFL star and NC State alumnus, aspires to lead his former college team as their head coach with seasoned experience fueling his ambition.

Russell Wilson has surfaced in the search for NC State’s next head coach.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the former Seahawks quarterback interviewed Tuesday for the Wolfpack job. Wilson spent three seasons at NC State from 2008-10 before transferring to Wisconsin for his final college season in 2011.

Wilson is not the only former NC State quarterback in the mix. ESPN reported Saturday that Philip Rivers has “engaged in serious discussions” about coaching his alma mater.

NC State moved on from Dave Doeren on Oct. 24 after a 3-4 start. Doeren was in his 14th season leading the program.

Wilson, 37, retired from the NFL in June after a 14-year career and is working this fall as a CBS Sports analyst on “The NFL Today” pregame show.

His pro résumé is loaded. Wilson led Seattle to two Super Bowl appearances and a title during his run with the Seahawks from 2012-21, building a reputation for deep-ball precision and the kind of scrambling that made defenders chase shadows. He also rewrote much of the franchise record book, finished in the top four of AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year voting three times and won the NFL’s 2020 Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

The end of his Seattle tenure came in March 2022, when the Seahawks traded him to the Broncos in a blockbuster deal. That move sent Seattle in one direction and Wilson in another. The Seahawks used the haul of draft capital to help build toward their 2025 Super Bowl-winning team, while Wilson’s career took a sharp turn downward.

Since leaving Seattle, Wilson has gone 17-27 as a starter across three teams in four seasons. He was 11-19 in Denver from 2022-23, 6-5 with the Steelers in 2024 and 0-3 with the Giants in 2025 before first-round pick Jaxson Dart replaced him.

Across his 14 NFL seasons, Wilson threw for 46,966 yards, 353 touchdowns and 114 interceptions. He also rushed for 5,568 yards and 31 scores, making him the only player in league history with more than 40,000 passing yards and 5,000 rushing yards.

Ohio State Faces A New Oregon Twist In This QB Battle

Matayo Uiagalelei is getting his first look at Ohio States stadium when the Ducks head to Columbus, and the Oregon edge rusher knows the setting will be part of the challenge. As he previewed the matchup, Uiagalelei pointed to the quarterback situation on both sides and the way injuries have changed the feel of a game that already carried plenty of weight. He also made sure to note how Oregon has kept working through it, including the role Dante Moore has played on scout team even while dealing with a concussion.

Uiagaleleis comments also offered a window into how Oregon is sizing up the Buckeyes beyond the quarterback questions. He talked through Ohio States offense, singled out key players and described the mindset the Ducks are bringing into the week. For a team heading into one of the sports toughest road environments, the intrigue is not just who starts at quarterback, but how both sides adjust when the game finally kicks off. [Read more 🡒]

Oregons Injury Problems Make These Transfer Departures Sting Even More

Oregons injury-plagued 2026 season has already forced the Ducks to lean hard on their depth, with quarterback Dante Moore out for the year and a string of offensive players missing games along the way. The defense has held up better on the injury front, but the roster has still felt the impact of departures, especially when the team is trying to patch together answers week to week.

What makes that sting a little more is seeing several former Ducks pop up for their new programs in Week 9. Kamar Mothudi, Keith Brown and others turned in notable performances elsewhere, a reminder that Oregon did not just lose bodies in the portal, it lost players who can still help on Saturdays. For a team already navigating so many health issues, those exits make the margin even thinner. [Read more 🡒]

Oregon Now Knows What Kind Of Ohio State Test Is Coming

Ohio State has cleared up at least one part of the picture for Oregon, and it comes with a familiar kind of late-season uncertainty. Ryan Day confirmed that Luke Fahey will start at quarterback for the Buckeyes in the upcoming matchup with the Ducks, after Fahey also got the nod in the previous game when Julian Sayin went down with an arm injury. It gives Oregon a better sense of the challenge ahead, even if it does not change the fact that this is still a Big Ten heavyweight with a 6-2 record coming into the game.

For Oregon, the timing matters because the Ducks are dealing with a backup quarterback of their own, which makes this one feel less like a standard November showdown and more like a test of depth and adaptability on both sides. Knowing who will line up under center for Ohio State helps narrow the scouting report, but it does not remove the pressure that comes with facing a ranked-caliber opponent in a game where both teams are trying to manage around injuries and keep their season on track.
