Oregons Playoff Hopes May Hinge On One Crucial Return

Despite offensive struggles and uncertainties at quarterback, the Oregon Ducks' national championship odds have surged, making their path to the College Football Playoff more promising.

Oregon’s offense may have sputtered for much of Saturday night, but the Ducks still walked away with something bigger than a late win over Nebraska: a noticeable jump in their national championship odds.

After squeezing out a 17-14 victory over the Cornhuskers at Autzen Stadium, Oregon climbed to +5000 to win the title at BetMGM. DraftKings moved the Ducks from +7000 to +5000, while FanDuel shifted them from +8000 to +6500. For a team that entered the season at +700 before sliding as low as +6600 last weekend, the market is clearly buying back in.

That belief comes despite what happened on the field. Oregon produced only 242 total yards against Nebraska and had just 91 before quarterback Dylan Raiola entered in the fourth quarter to help save the day. The Ducks weren’t exactly lighting it up, but Raiola’s late heroics may have been enough to keep Oregon’s College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Still, there’s another factor driving the betting move: the possible return of starting quarterback Dante Moore.

Moore has practiced with the team, but his status is still unsettled as Oregon heads on the road to face Illinois at Gies Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Even with the uncertainty, oddsmakers appear to be factoring in what the Ducks look like when Moore is on the field.

And when he’s available, the difference is hard to miss. Moore has thrown for 926 yards, nine touchdowns and zero interceptions this season, giving Oregon a higher level of play than what it has gotten at times from Raiola and third-string quarterback Brock Thomas.

There’s also a fair question of what Oregon’s record might look like if Moore had been healthy against UCLA and avoided any play-tipping concerns against Oklahoma State. If things had broken that way, the Ducks could be sitting at 6-0 right now, much closer to the preseason +700 mark.

Even with the odds improving, the margin for error is razor-thin. Oregon is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big Ten play, and another loss would effectively end its College Football Playoff hopes.

The path forward is manageable, though not exactly easy. Oregon finishes October at Illinois, then comes home to play No.

24 Northwestern before facing No. 3 Ohio State.

The Buckeyes lost star quarterback Julian Sayin on Saturday for several weeks after an arm injury against No. 6 Indiana, a development that changes the look of that matchup.

From there, the Ducks’ closing stretch is less daunting than it once appeared. Michigan, Michigan State and Washington have combined for a 2-9 conference record, and Oregon’s remaining opponents are just 7-12 in league play.

If the Ducks had lost to Nebraska, the chatter around shutting down Moore for the season ahead of the 2027 NFL draft might have only gotten louder. Instead, Oregon is still alive, the odds keep improving, and Moore’s status now sits at the center of everything in Eugene.

Oregons New Five-Star Commit Is Buying Into One Big Defensive Vision

Rashad Streets is still early in his path, but the five-star edge rusher from Raleigh, North Carolina, already sounds like a player who understands why Oregon has become such an attractive landing spot for elite defenders. The 2027 commit spent time at Autzen Stadium recently, where he connected with Dan Lanning and defensive coordinator Chris Hampton and spent part of the visit talking through how he could fit into the Ducks scheme.

What stands out for Oregon is how Streets' speed and bend line up with the Wide-9 style the Ducks want from the edge. He is expected to add bulk over time, but the framework is already there for him to grow into a role similar to what current edge rushers Matayo Uiagalelei and Teitum Tuioti provide. For a program that keeps selling disruption up front, Streets looks like another piece who sees the same big-picture defensive vision. [Read more 🡒]

Illinois Faces A Precarious Oregon Test With QB Uncertainty On Both Sides

The buildup to Oregons Week 8 matchup with Illinois has taken on an unusual wrinkle, with both programs entering the game uncertain at quarterback. Bret Bielema said Illinois has had to prepare for multiple Oregon options because of the Ducks injury situation, and that kind of uncertainty can change a game plan quickly this late in the season. For Oregon, the focus is on Dante Moore, who is recovering from a concussion and could be back in time to face the Illini.

Illinois has its own quarterback concern to manage, with Katin Houser expected to miss several weeks after a hand procedure. That leaves both staffs trying to balance preparation with unknowns, a tricky spot in any Big Ten matchup and especially one involving a team as deep and dynamic as Oregon. For the Ducks, it adds another layer to a game that was already shaping up as a test of flexibility before the ball is even snapped. [Read more 🡒]

Ohio State Just Gave Nebraska Fans A Reason To Believe

Nebraskas narrow loss to Oregon still looks better with each passing week, and the timing of the bye gives the Cornhuskers a chance to catch their breath at 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten. They have already shown they can hang with one of the leagues top teams, and the way the conference has churned since then has only sharpened the sense that Nebraska is not far off from being a real factor in the race.

Ohio States 19-15 win over Indiana did more than snap the Hoosiers 22-game winning streak, it also came with the kind of quarterback setback that can change a seasons outlook in a hurry. With Julian Sayin expected to miss multiple weeks, the door is at least cracked open for opponents still waiting to see what the Buckeyes look like without him, and Nebraskas path through the rest of the schedule just got a little more interesting.
