USC escaped Piscataway with a win, but the Trojans left plenty of questions behind.
No. 12 USC beat Rutgers 42-35 on Saturday in its first road game of the season, yet the performance looked a lot like the road issues that bothered the Trojans a year ago. USC was a 21-point favorite, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, and still had to survive a serious push from the Scarlet Knights before getting out with the victory.
Rutgers made life uncomfortable from the start, especially through the air. KJ Duff was a problem all afternoon for USC’s secondary, and he opened the scoring with an 11-yard touchdown catch after shaking free from cornerback Jontez Williams and getting a foot down in bounds on a strong play.
The Scarlet Knights also found a big edge on special teams. Greg Schiano called a fake punt from deep in Rutgers territory, and the trick play worked, turning into a first down and later a 13-yard touchdown catch by tight end Elias Coke.
By the third quarter, Rutgers had an answer for every USC scoring drive. Antwan Raymond put together the best game of his career with more than 100 rushing yards, and he and Clay Thevenin accounted for Rutgers’ 14 points in the period.
USC’s defense finished the day having allowed 292 passing yards and 168 rushing yards, and the problems kept coming late. The Trojans gave up a touchdown on fourth down in the fourth quarter when Vernon Allen III slipped open over the middle for an uncovered slant that pulled Rutgers within 42-35 with under five minutes left.
Still, USC made enough plays to keep the game from slipping away. The Trojans stuffed Raymond and Rutgers on a key fourth down, giving Jayden Maiava and the offense the ball in excellent field position. That stop led to a touchdown catch by Riley Wormley and gave USC a needed cushion.
The first half belonged to USC’s safeties in the turnover department. Christian Pierce got the Trojans’ first takeaway of the game in the first quarter, and it set up an 11-yard touchdown run by King Miller.
Later, Prophet Brown added his second career interception and first pick-six, racing 99 yards for a touchdown. That return tied the record for the longest pick-six return, a mark previously held by Charles Phillips in 1974.
The Trojans now turn their attention to Oregon in next week’s primetime game. The Ducks just set their school record for most points in program history at Autzen Stadium, rolling past Portland State 84-0.
USC came away with the road win, but Lincoln Riley and Gary Patterson have plenty to sort through after a shaky showing. If the Trojans want to handle Oregon at home, the cleanup has to happen fast.
