247Sports’ preseason state-by-state player of the year picks put Oregon recruiting front and center, with two Ducks commits earning top honors in other states and another Oregon target drawing votes at home.
The headline names for Oregon fans are quarterback Will Mencl and athlete Brayton Feister. Mencl was selected as Arizona’s preseason player of the year, while Feister took the same honor in Ohio. Back in Oregon, though, the award went to 2028 quarterback Zeke Thomas, who is already committed to Boise State.
Mencl, a four-star quarterback from Chandler High School, committed to Oregon in April over Auburn and Penn State. He enters the year as 247Sports’ No. 7 quarterback nationally and the No. 1 recruit in Arizona. His junior season gave the selection plenty of weight: he helped Chandler finish 10-3 and reach the AIA Open Division title game, throwing for 3,815 yards, 33 touchdowns and only 5 interceptions, according to MaxPreps.
247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins said, "There wasn't a player I pushed harder to get a late invite into the Navy All-American Bowl last year than Mencl. I don't think he gets enough credit for how fearless he is as both a passer and a runner. You look at what he did as a junior and moments never really looked too big for him."
Feister’s rise has come even more recently. The four-star athlete from Massillon (Ohio) Washington committed to Oregon on Aug. 14 and, 10 days later, landed the preseason player of the year nod in Ohio.
He’s ranked as Ohio’s No. 10 recruit in the 2027 class, but his production on both sides of the ball made him impossible to ignore. As a junior, he reportedly topped 1,000 yards and scored 19 touchdowns on offense, while also piling up 133 tackles and 13 sacks on defense.
He chose Oregon over Georgia, Cal and Ohio State.
Ivins said, "Feister is going to go down as one of the best high school football players in the senior class. We ranked as a four-star prospect when he had just five offers primarily because we believed in his win-at-all-cost mindset, on both sides of the ball. He's a stat keeper's nightmare and just one of those kids that hates to lose."
Oregon’s own state player of the year selection went to Thomas, a three-star quarterback from Willamette High School who is committed to Boise State. Even with four Oregon commits in the Ducks’ 2027 class from inside the state, Thomas got the nod. Lake Oswego edge Josh Christensen, another Oregon commit, received votes, and West Linn cornerback Josiah Molden, the top-ranked 2027 prospect in Oregon, is also part of the class.
