Oregon Suddenly Looks Like Title Favorite In New SP+

Oregon Ducks emerge as a formidable contender for the 2026 national championship, fueled by strong SP+ ratings and high expectations on both sides of the ball.

Oregon football and computers have a storied history, tracing back to the early days of the Oregon Trail game on those first Apple computers. Fast forward to today, and the complexity of both has skyrocketed. Now, you can catch a Ducks game on a device that fits right in your pocket.

In the realm of college football, computer ratings have evolved significantly. ESPN's SP+ ratings are a prime example, and they're giving Oregon fans plenty to cheer about. According to these ratings, the Ducks are poised to be one of the nation's top teams, with a serious shot at the national championship in the 2026 season.

So, what’s fueling these high expectations? The SP+ rankings consider four key factors: returning production, recent history, recent recruiting, and the impact of coaching changes. Oregon shines in all these areas, which explains why they’ve snagged the No. 2 spot, trailing only their new rival, Ohio State.

As ESPN's Bill Connelly puts it, the Ducks might just be ready to claim the top prize. If the Big Ten continues its streak of different national champions each year-following Michigan in 2023, Ohio State in 2024, and Indiana last season-Oregon stands as a strong favorite.

However, they might have to overcome a familiar adversary. Ohio State begins the season as the comfortable No. 1 in SP+, thanks to their stellar recent history and impressive returning production, sitting pretty at 31st in that category.

They lead the pack ahead of Oregon, Notre Dame, Georgia, and other top contenders.

Oregon's SP+ rating of 28.3 is just shy of Ohio State's 31.8. Interestingly, the Ducks outpace the Buckeyes in offense, defense, and special teams. Yet, when you factor in intangibles like recruiting and coaching, Ohio State holds the edge, with Indiana, last year’s champion, rounding out the top five.

But remember, while computers provide intriguing insights, the real action unfolds on the field, where athletes turn predictions into reality.
