Oregon Stunned by Maryland in Big Ten Tournament Showdown Ending Season

Oregon's struggles culminate in a hard-fought Big Ten Tournament opener against Maryland, concluding a challenging season with a notable farewell to senior Nate Bittle.

In a season marked by ups and downs, Oregon's journey came to a close on Tuesday afternoon. The Ducks fell to Maryland 70-60 in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament, concluding a challenging campaign that saw them tally the most losses since the 2008-09 season.

This defeat also marked the end of Nate Bittle's notable five-year stint with the Ducks, a rarity in today's college basketball landscape where players often move schools.

Maryland set the pace from the start, jumping to a commanding 33-12 lead at halftime. Oregon struggled to find their rhythm, shooting a cold 3-for-22 from the field and missing all ten three-point attempts in the first half. The Terrapins capitalized on Oregon's offensive woes, establishing a lead that proved insurmountable.

The Ducks showed resilience in the second half, bringing more energy and scoring 48 points. They improved their shooting to 53.3 percent and outscored Maryland 48-37 in the final 20 minutes. However, the early deficit left little room for a comeback.

Despite trimming the lead to single digits, Oregon couldn't seize control. Bittle led the charge with 16 points, supported by Kwame Evans Jr.'s 14 points and nine rebounds. TK Simpkins chipped in 10 points, but overall, the Ducks managed just 37 percent shooting and went 4-of-21 from beyond the arc.

Maryland's David Coit led all scorers with 17 points, while Andre Mills and Solomon Washington contributed 12 points each. The Terrapins shot 40 percent and nailed nine three-pointers, while also dominating the boards with a 38-28 rebounding advantage, including 13 offensive rebounds.

For Oregon, the season's end reflects a year where consistency was elusive. Plagued by injuries and offensive struggles, the Ducks faced a tough conference slate that left them needing a miracle in Chicago to keep postseason hopes alive.

As the curtain falls on this season, it also marks the end of an era for Bittle, whose dedication to Oregon over five seasons stands as a testament to his commitment and the unique path he carved in college basketball.
