Oregon Finally Looks Different At The Perfect Time

In an impressive display of offensive prowess, the Oregon Ducks surged past No. 20 Northwestern with a 34-26 victory, turning the tide after a challenging first half.

Oregon didn’t just beat No. 20 Northwestern on Saturday. It finally found the kind of offensive rhythm that had been missing, and it showed up in the biggest moments of a 34-26 win.

The Ducks spent much of the afternoon digging out of a hole after falling behind 20-6 in the first half, but the comeback turned on explosive plays and a sharper edge from quarterback Dylan Raiola. He finished 22 of 31 for 336 yards and three touchdowns, while Dakorien Moore delivered the kind of game-breaking performance Oregon needed, catching seven passes for 128 yards and two scores.

Moore’s 75-yard touchdown grab in the fourth quarter stretched the lead and gave Oregon room to breathe after it had already clawed in front. The Ducks scored 21 of their 34 points after halftime and held Northwestern to 456 total yards while coming up with key stops around the red zone. Oregon also had just one turnover, and that giveaway turned into three points for the Wildcats (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten).

For Oregon (5-3, 3-2 Big Ten), the win brings real momentum into next week’s road game against No. 2 Ohio State.

Northwestern opened with confidence on play-action and got on the board first, but Oregon’s defense stiffened near the goal line and forced a field goal for a 3-0 Wildcats lead. The Ducks then had a setback when Raiola fumbled on a keeper, and Northwestern made the most of the extra possession.

Chip Kelly’s offense delivered the day’s first big strike for Northwestern, a 64-yard touchdown from Aidan Chiles to Griffin Wilde. The play started with three players, including Wilde, lined up in a straight line in the backfield to Chiles’ right before the route traffic opened up the defense at the second level.

Oregon answered with field position after Dierre Hill’s strong kickoff return, but the Ducks had to settle for a field goal after Jordon Davison was injured. That made it 10-3 after one quarter.

The Wildcats added another field goal to go up 13-3, and Oregon’s offense still wasn’t finding its footing. Raiola did spark a drive with a 35-yard completion to Jalen Lott, but a bad snap by Iapani Laloulu knocked the Ducks out of the red zone.

Gage Hurych’s field goal trimmed it to 13-6, yet Northwestern kept rolling. Chiles pushed the Wildcats down the field with poise and finished the march with a five-yard naked bootleg touchdown run.

That left Oregon staring at a 20-6 deficit midway through the second quarter. The Ducks were chasing both the creativity of Kelly’s offense and the efficiency Chiles was bringing to the other side.

Then Oregon finally started to hit back. Lott came through again, Evan Stewart added a 38-yard catch, and Raiola found Moore for a 10-yard touchdown to cut the margin to 20-13 at halftime.

The third quarter opened with more trouble when Moore fumbled near midfield on Oregon’s first drive, setting up another Northwestern field goal and a 23-13 lead. But the Ducks began leaning on their backup running backs, with Brandon Smith and Da’Jaun Riggs both producing chunk gains to keep the offense moving.

Raiola then delivered a clean touchdown strike to Jamari Johnson from 10 yards out, pulling Oregon within 23-20 with 8:46 left in the third.

After both offenses stalled for a stretch, Oregon got a critical stop on third and short and regained possession with 2:43 left in the quarter. Raiola then got loose behind a lead block from Smith for a 31-yard gain, and Stewart added a 20-yard third-down catch to move the Ducks close.

A pass interference penalty pushed Oregon all the way to the four, and after two Brandon Smith runs and one “Shout” later, the Ducks scored on fourth and goal from the two. It was the kind of aggressive call Oregon had been building toward all week, and it put the Ducks ahead for the first time, 27-23, early in the fourth.

Northwestern answered with one more push. Chiles escaped pressure outside the pocket and found Wilde downfield to reach the Oregon 24, but the Ducks held again. Nasir Wyatt sacked Chiles on third down, forcing a field goal that cut the lead to 27-26.

Then Moore put the game out of reach. Raiola launched a 75-yard touchdown to the sophomore receiver, who cut back halfway to the end zone and finished the play for his second score of the day. That made it 34-26 Oregon.

Northwestern still had chances. A missed field goal with 5:14 left handed the ball back to the Ducks, but the Wildcats’ defense forced another stop and returned possession to Chiles and company with 2:56 remaining.

D’Antre Robinson then sacked Chiles to create a third-and-long situation Northwestern couldn’t overcome. Moore was injured on the ensuing punt return and left the field under his own power.

Na'eem Offord Gets His Biggest Oregon Test Yet Against Ohio State

After the win over Northwestern, Oregons attention turns quickly to a far bigger measuring stick: an 11th-ranked Ohio State team that will bring plenty of national attention and a familiar storyline with it. Cornerback Na'eem Offord sits right at the center of it, not just because of the matchup, but because he was once an Ohio State recruit before flipping to Oregon and becoming one of the more interesting figures on this weeks radar.

For Ducks fans, it adds another layer to a game that already carries weight. Offord now gets a chance to show what he can do against the program that once wanted him, and hell be doing it against an Ohio State offense that is missing key players. However the matchup plays out, it gives Oregon one of its most intriguing individual tests of the season and a spotlight moment for a defender whose path to Eugene already made him a talking point. Bucky Irving Just Gave Oregon Fans Another Reason To Dream

Bucky Irving keeps giving Oregon fans plenty to track on Sundays, and his latest outing was the kind that turns heads far beyond Tampa Bay. In a 16-0 win over the Atlanta Falcons, the former Ducks standout carried the offense in a way that felt almost old-school, piling up career highs with 27 carries and 170 rushing yards while finding the end zone once.

The Buccaneers also made franchise history with 323 rushing yards, and they did it in a game where they did not complete a pass, a rare feat in the Super Bowl era. For Irving, it was another sign that his rookie-to-second-year surge is real, with his season now on pace to be his best yet as he continues to build a reputation as one of the leagues most reliable young backs. Oregon Heads Into Ohio State With A Worry Fans Cant Ignore

Oregon got past Northwestern, but the win came with the kind of injury fallout that can linger into a much bigger week. The Ducks took hits at running back and on special teams, with Jordon Davison leaving with a leg injury, Dierre Hill Jr. getting banged up and returner Dakorien Moore also dealing with an issue as the team turned its attention to Ohio State.

Dan Lanning said Davison will need further evaluation, while Hill is still being described as a little banged up. Moore, though, is expected to be ready for the Buckeyes, and Jeremiah McClellan is back practicing as he works his way back from a broken foot. Even with some encouraging signs, Oregons depth is about to be tested in a game where every healthy body matters. [Read more 🡒]
