Oregon Faces Real Questions After Another Short-Handed Offensive Letdown

Illinois clinches victory over Oregon, ending their unbeaten Big Ten road streak, as Dixon and Laughery deliver key touchdowns.

Aidan Laughery gave Illinois the spark it needed, and Collin Dixon put the game away.

Laughery rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown, while Dixon hauled in a diving 23-yard score late in the fourth quarter as Illinois knocked off Oregon 21-10 on Saturday in Champaign, Ill.

The win snapped Oregon’s run of success on the road in conference play. Since joining the Big Ten in 2024, the Ducks had won 10 straight road games in league action before running into an Illinois team that finished stronger and finished cleaner.

Michael Clayton II led Illinois at quarterback, going 11 of 18 for 84 yards and two touchdowns. One of those came on the corner throw to Dixon, who finished with six catches for 65 yards.

“I have no idea how Collin made that catch,” Illinois coach Bret Bielema said about Dixon's game-clinching TD.

Illinois took control when Clayton hit Christian Abney on a 9-yard play-action touchdown early in the third quarter, pushing the Illini ahead 14-10 for good.

The momentum shift started just before halftime. With Illinois struggling to move the ball - the offense had managed only 43 yards before that point - Laughery broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run with 2:15 left in the half, cutting Oregon’s lead to 10-7 and breathing life into the home sideline.

“I thought this team could do a lot better than what we've done,” Bielema said.

Oregon still had plenty of production through the air from Dylan Raiola, who completed 27 of 41 passes for 246 yards. Dakorien Moore caught nine passes for 70 yards.

On the ground, Jordon Davison ran 14 times for 92 yards and a touchdown, while Dierre Hill Jr. added 83 rushing yards on 13 carries.

“Give credit to Illinois. They were the tougher team and that showed up in the second half," said Oregon coach Dan Lanning.

“We have to evaluate who we are. Each person needs to look within and identify where they can improve.”

The Ducks entered the game without star quarterback Dante Moore, who missed a third straight contest after suffering a concussion Sept. 26 against USC. Oregon has scored just 39 points in the games he’s missed, a stark dip for a program that has been one of the nation’s most explosive under Lanning, with the Ducks leading the country in 30-plus point games (48) and TDs (312) since 2022.

They were also without four of their top wide receivers. Evan Stewart, who leads the team with 27 catches for 352 yards and four touchdowns, had been suspended indefinitely following a DUI arrest early Sunday morning. Jalen Lott, Messiah Hampton and Jeremiah McClellan also sat out because of injuries.

Illinois, meanwhile, had to adjust at quarterback too. Freshman Michael Clayton II started in place of fifth-year senior Katin Houser, who broke his hand Oct. 10 against Michigan State.

Clayton became only the sixth freshman in program history to start at quarterback, and he shared duties in the second half with Carson Boyd. Bielema described the rotation, organized by offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr., as “poetry in motion.”

Oregon also ran into problems on special teams. Kicker Gage Hurych, who had been named Big Ten special teams player of the week after making three field goals in a win over Nebraska, missed two 52-yard tries and a 39-yarder in the fourth quarter. He is 10 for 13 on field goals and 20 for 20 on PATs.

Illinois (4-3, 2-2) heads to Maryland next Saturday. Oregon (4-3, 2-2) returns home to face No. 24 Northwestern on Halloween.

Bo Nix And Bucky Irving Kept Oregons NFL Buzz Alive

Former Oregon standouts kept the Ducks pro pipeline in the spotlight over the weekend, with Bo Nix and Bucky Irving both turning in performances that will resonate back in Eugene. Nix sparked the Denver Broncos with a 62-yard touchdown run and finished with 222 passing yards and a touchdown, while Irving gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a jolt on the ground with 106 rushing yards and two scores.

Tez Johnson also found the end zone for Tampa Bay and added rushing yards, adding another layer to Oregons presence across the league. On the defensive side, Dillon Thieneman and Noah Sewell helped the Chicago Bears in their win over the New England Patriots, a reminder that the Ducks NFL footprint is stretching well beyond the usual spotlight names. Oregons Scoring Problem Just Put Dan Lanning Under Real Pressure

After a 21-10 loss to Illinois, Oregon made a change on the offensive side that had been building for weeks, parting ways with offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer in his first season on the job. For a program that came into the year expecting more from its attack, the move underscored how quickly patience can disappear when the offense stalls and the losses start to pile up.

Dan Lanning did not immediately name a replacement play-caller, leaving the Ducks with an obvious next question as they try to steady things before the season slips further. The timing makes the decision as much about urgency as accountability, and it puts the spotlight squarely on how Oregon plans to fix an offense that has struggled to find consistency. [Read more 🡒]

Oregons Trip To Ohio State Suddenly Feels Like A Real Opportunity

The calendar has finally put Oregons visit to Ohio State on the board, with the Big Ten announcing kickoff time and TV details for the November 7 matchup. It is a game that already carried plenty of weight, but the atmosphere around it has shifted noticeably in recent days as both teams head into it with questions that were not on the table when the schedule was first drawn up.

Ohio State will have to adjust without starting quarterback Julian Sayin, who is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury, and backup Luke Fahey is expected to get the nod. Oregon, meanwhile, comes in unranked at 4-3 after parting ways with offensive coordinator Drew Mehringer, but Dylan Raiolas recent improvement has at least given the Ducks a clearer path into a game that now feels far more open than it did a week ago.
