USC will get a prime recruiting stage on Sept. 26 when the No. 12 Trojans host No. 20 Oregon at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and one of the biggest visitors expected in the building is five-star safety Casey Barner.
Barner, a Georgia native and standout at Powder Springs High in McEachern, is making the trip to Los Angeles for the game. In his conversation with On3/Rivals national recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong, Barner made it clear the visit means plenty to him.
"I’m really excited to get out to USC and experience the campus, meet more of the staff, and learn more about the program and the culture there. I’m looking forward to building those relationships and seeing what USC is all about," Barner said in his interview with Wiltfong.
USC will not be the only program with a stake in his recruitment. Oregon is also pushing hard for Barner, and Wiltfong noted the Ducks are among the schools making a strong run at him right now.
The 5-10 defender sits at the top of the safety rankings in the Rivals Industry rankings. ESPN and 247Sports also list him as the No. 1 safety in the country, and Rivals has him as the No. 3 overall prospect in the 2028 class.
That kind of profile explains why both Oregon and USC are so invested. Barner has built his reputation as a disruptive defender who can work in the box, drop into coverage, and affect passing games in a bunch of different ways.
His style is the kind that should jump off the screen for both Dan Lanning and Lincoln Riley. He attacks downhill, wants to blow up runs, and plays with the urgency of a defender determined to be the first one there rather than the last one cleaning up the play.
There’s more to him than aggression, though. Barner also brings a sharp processing ability, using film study to diagnose where the ball is going and get there first. That sort of football IQ could appeal to USC defensive coordinator Gary Patterson, whose background has long included a preference for smart, adaptable defenders.
Patterson may not be as front-and-center in recruiting as he was during his TCU days, but his understanding of how to use a player like Barner could matter a lot here. USC will need more than Riley’s pitch, and more than the efforts of safeties coach Paul Gonzalez or general manager Chad Bowden, to make this one stick.
For the Trojans, this is a clear chance to strike while the iron’s hot. The visit could be the one that pushes USC to the top of Barner’s list, or even leads to a verbal commitment on the spot, depending on how strongly the Trojans recruit him while he watches USC and Oregon go head-to-head.
