Oregon Ducks Rely on Young Talent to Bolster Defense This Spring

Oregon's defense sees an opportunity for young linebackers to rise, as they navigate offseason changes and fill key roles.

The Oregon Ducks are gearing up for an intriguing spring as they navigate a significant reshuffle in their defensive lineup. After narrowly missing out on a national championship berth, the Ducks are facing the challenge of replacing some key players who have moved on to the pros or transferred out.

The most notable departure is linebacker Bryce Boettcher. The Eugene native and former walk-on was a defensive powerhouse, leading the team with 136 tackles last season. His leadership and presence will be missed, and new defensive coordinator Chris Hampton has the task of finding a worthy successor.

Enter senior linebacker Jerry Mixon. After a standout fall with 65 tackles, including five for a loss, and two interceptions, Mixon is poised to be the defensive play-caller. The pressing question is who will partner with him in the heart of the defense.

The Ducks have no shortage of talent at linebacker, but identifying who will rise to the occasion is key. Senior Devon Jackson, who made significant strides last season, is a strong candidate. His 41 tackles and impressive speed in pass coverage make him a versatile asset.

Then there’s the young trio: sophomores Dylan Williams, Brayden Platt, and Gavin Nix. Though they’ve yet to see extensive action, their potential is undeniable. Platt’s versatility was on display when he switched to running back during the Peach Bowl, highlighting his athleticism and the coaching staff’s confidence in him.

Hampton is optimistic about the newcomers stepping up. Reflecting on last season’s unexpected breakout stars in the secondary, he believes the linebacker room is brimming with talent ready to shine.

“It's their time now,” Hampton shared in an interview. “We’ve recruited well, and these guys have the talent.

Now it's about taking ownership and seizing the moment.”

As spring unfolds, all eyes will be on who can fill Boettcher’s shoes and elevate the Ducks’ defense to new heights. With a mix of seasoned players and promising newcomers, the stage is set for an exciting season of Oregon football.
