The Oregon Ducks have been on a journey of growth and resilience, and their recent seasons tell a story of a team inching closer to the pinnacle of college football. After their 2024 campaign ended with a tough loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinal, they bounced back in 2025, pushing further into the CFP Semifinal. Yet again, they faced a formidable opponent in the Indiana Hoosiers, who would go on to claim the national title.
While back-to-back seasons ending with 20-plus point losses might seem disheartening, the Ducks have shown progress and determination. Head coach Dan Lanning is optimistic that these experiences are stepping stones toward their ultimate goal: a national championship.
Reflecting on the past season, Lanning shared his thoughts during the first spring press conference. "We didn’t finish the way we wanted to, but there’s a lot of lessons there," he noted. "I think that film’s been watched a lot by all of us."
Indeed, the Ducks have plenty to learn from their defeat to Indiana, where turnovers and a 34-point margin highlighted areas for improvement. However, Lanning is focused on the future, emphasizing the fresh start that 2026 brings.
"It’s a new group now," he explained. "A new team.
Every year’s individual, right? What we accomplished last year has nothing to do with what we’re going to accomplish this year.
It allows you to say, okay, what can we add? What are the wrinkles that we can adjust?
How can we play off of our personnel?"
The Ducks' roster will see some changes with nine players participating in the NFL Scouting Combine, yet continuity remains with key players returning. Quarterback Dante Moore, wide receiver Evan Stewart, tight end Jamari Johnson, and the entire starting defensive line are back, ready to lead the charge.
With a standout 2025 freshman class now more experienced, and Moore gaining confidence from 15 additional starts, the Ducks are poised for another strong run. As Lanning wisely pointed out, past seasons are merely lessons to build upon, and the Ducks are eager to translate those lessons into success on the field.
The Ducks are aiming for something they've never achieved before: the title of national champions. With their eyes on the prize, this could be the year they make history.
