Georgia running back Dante Dowdell is in serious condition after an ATV accident earlier this month, leaving his status with the Bulldogs uncertain and putting football far behind everything else right now.
Kirby Smart said the team is taking it one day at a time while Dowdell remains hospitalized in Atlanta. “We're praying for him and his family.
We expect a full recovery, but the outlook right now is we're waiting to see, said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. "We'll go day to day with him and see.
I hate that for him and his family, but he's a great kid. It's been tough.
A lot of our players have been over there to see him. It's just one of those really tough situations."
Dowdell, who began his college career at Oregon in 2023, played six games for the Ducks as a freshman before moving to Nebraska in 2024. There, he rushed for 614 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. He transferred again after that and spent 2025 at Kentucky, where he ran for 560 yards.
He then landed at Georgia and was expected to be a major part of the Bulldogs’ offense this season. Dowdell also scored in UGA’s spring game, but that role is now in limbo.
Reports say Dowdell is at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, a facility that specializes in treatment and rehabilitation, including spinal cord and brain injuries. A long recovery could be ahead, and for now, the focus is on his health rather than his football future.
No details have been released about what caused the accident. The Georgia program has dealt with a series of vehicle-related incidents involving players since 2023, including DUIs, speeding and reckless driving, but there is no indication in the source of what led to Dowdell’s crash.
