Chris Simms drew heavy backlash during NBC’s college football halftime coverage of Oregon-USC after weighing in on the hit that sent Oregon quarterback Dante Moore to the hospital.
The play came when USC linebacker Desman Stephens II delivered a massive hit on Moore, and plenty of fans immediately wanted Stephens suspended or ejected. Simms took a different view, saying Moore had slid “very late” and left the defender in what he called a “no-win situation.” He also said the celebration by Stephens and the Trojans afterward was a “bad look.”
“Dante Moore, I do think, slid very late, and put the defender in a kind of no-win situation,” Simms said during the segment.
That was enough to set off a wave of anger online. Simms already has a reputation for polarizing takes, but this one pushed a lot of viewers past their limit. On X, fans called for him to be fired and unloaded on the analysis with blunt criticism.
“Fire Chris Simms for stupidity,” one user declared on X.
“Flop of a take. Is he trying to be hired by ESPN?” asked another.
“Chris Simms can go home,” a third wrote.
“Worse pathetic stupid (expletive) take ever (Simms). Shameful.

For all the talk about deeper analysis, this was one of those moments where the temperature of the game mattered more than the debate. Fans were reacting to a player being taken to the hospital, and Simms’ comments landed badly in that setting.
Still, if the online reaction bothers him, Simms has never seemed like someone who spends much time worrying about it.
