Dante Moore Just Entered A Justin Herbert Debate Ducks Fans Will Feel

Amidst the speculation and fan division, the future of former Ducks star quarterback Justin Herbert with the Chargers hangs in the balance as rookie Dante Moore's potential looms large.

Justin Herbert’s rough start with the Los Angeles Chargers has opened the door to some loud speculation, and now Oregon Ducks fans are being pulled into the conversation too.

Field Yates, speaking as part of a Red Baron Pizza promotion, floated a scenario that would have Herbert out and Oregon quarterback Dante Moore stepping into the picture. It’s the kind of idea that can split a fan base in a hurry, especially with Herbert under heavy scrutiny after the Chargers opened 0-4.

Yates called the Chargers his biggest surprise, and not in a positive way. He pointed to the shift in the offense as a major reason for Herbert’s struggles.

Under Jim Harbaugh, Herbert thrived in a run-heavy, control-the-clock setup. Now Harbaugh has turned the offense over to former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, whose style Yates described as a "Ferrari" approach.

Herbert, according to Yates, has had trouble adjusting.

That has fueled talk that the Chargers may eventually need to move on from Herbert or alter the system around him. But Yates didn’t sound convinced that Herbert is the likeliest piece to be replaced.

"I think that if something happens after the season, far more likely that the plug is pulled on the system than the player," Yates told Lorenzo Reyna of Oregon Ducks on SI. "Jim Harbaugh has talked about Herbert as one of the greatest players he's ever seen. And perhaps that's Harbaugh hyperbole, but he's been the biggest fan of Justin Herbert since taking over a few years ago in Los Angeles."

Moore’s name enters the discussion because of the way he projects to the next level. The Oregon quarterback won’t get the chance to show NFL evaluators much this week against UCLA, since backup Dylan Raiola is projected to start that nationally ranked matchup while Moore continues recovering from the concussion he suffered in the Sept. 26 USC game.

Even so, Moore’s appeal is clear. Scouts are expected to like the way he pushes the ball deep, his touch on throws downfield, and the accuracy he shows working the middle of the field on dig and crosser routes. Yates also highlighted Moore’s poise, noting how he has stayed composed in big moments, including at Penn State on the road and against USC in 2025 after an early interception.

Moore entered this season with top-five buzz for the 2026 NFL Draft before choosing to return to Oregon. His 2026 numbers have been uneven so far. He has thrown for nine touchdowns and 926 yards while completing 69.7 percent of his passes, but the Ducks offense also stumbled in the upset loss to Oklahoma State in Week 2.

There is still plenty of time for Moore to change the draft conversation once he gets back on the field. If he does, the Chargers could end up as one of the teams watching closely, whether that means pairing him with Herbert or eventually moving on from the former Oregon star.

Herbert’s place in the NFL remains a big part of the Ducks’ quarterback pipeline. Oregon has also seen Bo Nix become a recent NFL starter, while Marcus Mariota has started consecutive games for the Washington Commanders this season. Dillon Gabriel is backing up for the Cleveland Browns, and Tyler Shough, who spent his first two college seasons at Oregon, is now with the New Orleans Saints.

That makes Moore a possible future addition to the list in 2027. The question is whether he would land in the same NFL building as one of Oregon’s past quarterbacks.

For now, the Chargers’ situation remains unsettled. Herbert has made a Pro Bowl and signed a five-year, $262.5 million extension in July 2023, but he still has not won a playoff game. With fans pushing for change and Yates saying the team has to decide how long its window really is, the pressure around Herbert and the Chargers is only getting louder.

"If things continue the way they are, obviously change is coming. But if things turn around a little bit, changes might still be coming," Yates said.

"The Chargers must decide is, how long is this window to reasonably compete? You have a QB [Herbert] who has plenty of time left.

The Chargers are in a sticky situation right now."

Oregons Quarterback Situation Just Got More Complicated At The Worst Time

Dante Moore being ruled out for the upcoming game against UCLA puts Oregon in a tricky spot at exactly the wrong time, but the Ducks at least know they have a ready-made answer behind him. Dylan Raiola is expected to make the start after already stepping in and helping Oregon beat USC, when he threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns and looked comfortable running the offense.

Dan Lanning has made it clear he trusts Raiola to handle the job if Moore cannot go, while also signaling that the Ducks are not going to force the issue with concussion protocol. For Oregon, the bigger concern now is less about one game and more about how long this uncertainty lingers at quarterback as the schedule keeps moving. [Read more 🡒]

Oregon Just Unveiled A New Look Ducks Fans Will Definitely Debate

Week 6 brought the usual flood of college football alternates, throwbacks and one-off concepts, and Oregon once again found itself in the middle of the conversation. The Ducks leaned into their "Origin of Speed" design, part of a slate of notable looks around the sport that also included Floridas 1966 throwback, Notre Dames all-green setup with a special logo, and Utahs icy white helmets.

For Oregon, uniform unveilings have become part of the weekly theater, the kind of detail that fans notice immediately and argue about just as quickly. This one fits the Ducks long-running reputation for trying something new, but it also sits alongside a crowded Week 6 field of sharply different styles, from Western Kentuckys offering to Georgia Tech, Kentucky and FIU, making the debate over Oregons latest look feel very much in line with the programs identity. Bucky Irving Just Gave Ducks Fans A Reason To Watch Tampa Bay

Bucky Irving gave Oregon fans a little something extra to track Sunday, and it came in a game Tampa Bay needed badly. The Buccaneers went on the road and beat the Cowboys 24-16 in Week 5, with Irving doing the heavy lifting out of the backfield as he piled up a career-high 165 rushing yards and scored twice.

The performance stood out even more because Tampa Bay was again without Baker Mayfield, who missed his second straight game with a dislocated thumb. Rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels managed the offense efficiently, completing 19 of 25 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown, but Irving was the difference-maker in a win that should have Ducks fans keeping one eye on the NFL box scores.
