Dan Lanning didn’t spend Wednesday talking only about Oregon’s top-25 trip to USC or the pressure that comes with a Week 2 loss to Oklahoma State. He also made room for one of the softer edges of the season: the Bidwell family, and the role they continue to play around the program.
That family moment was on full display in Oregon’s Week 3 win over Portland State, when former Ducks punter Josh Bidwell watched from the sideline as his eldest son, Brady Bidwell, got late snaps and then found the end zone on a touchdown catch. It was Brady’s first score as an Oregon receiver and his first collegiate touchdown. Josh eventually made his way through a crowd of Ducks players to reach his son after the play.
The Bidwells’ presence has become a familiar thread inside the program. Brady, now a junior receiver, and Aaron, a sophomore receiver, both arrived as walk-ons after following in the footsteps of their father, who starred for Oregon in the late 1990s. Both brothers played at Marist High School locally before taking the long road to Division I.
Aaron put up 1,264 yards and 18 touchdowns on 73 catches as a senior in 2024. Brady, meanwhile, finished his 2023 season with 1,037 yards and 12 touchdowns on 80 receptions.
Lanning said the production matters, but so does everything the brothers bring to the building.
“Yeah, I mean, it starts with just when you talk about players on your team: what kind of impact do they have on the team, right? And Brady and Aaron both are guys that make our team better in every way,” Lanning said on Wednesday. “And it's however they can help the team.”
“They want to help the team, right? They're out there working their tail off every single day.
And Brady's been a guy that's continued to earn opportunities and trust because of what he's been able to do when he has been on the field,” he continued. “What he's done at practice, and it shows up.
He's a guy that every one of our coaches can count on.”
Lanning also pointed back to the Portland State game after the fact, saying the touchdown was one of those moments that sticks with a team.
"Some of your favorite moments are seeing guys that don't get recognized day in and day out, that you see work their tail off day in and day out, go out there and execute plays. You know, in games like this, Brady Bidwell getting that touchdown was a huge moment for everybody on our sideline, right?" said Lanning postgame.
He also praised the difficulty of the catch that produced Brady’s first score.
Josh Bidwell’s connection to Oregon runs deep beyond his playing days. After his Ducks career, he spent 11 years in the NFL as a punter.
His wife, Bethany Bidwell, formerly Smith, played softball for Oregon. Josh now remains around the program as team chaplain, a role he has held since before Lanning arrived.
“Obviously, they come from a great family, right? In spite of their father, they're still unbelievable kids,” Lanning joked.
“But no, I mean, Josh is here every single day. He doesn't get paid $1 from the University of Oregon.”
“He's here every day as team chaplain and is able to help out our team. And you know, he's made a huge impact beyond football on our organization. So, it's great to see,” Lanning said.
