Brandon Finney Jr. is one of the names Oregon coach Dan Lanning put in the spotlight Wednesday as the Ducks spend the early part of fall camp shuffling players into new spots and seeing who can handle more than one job.
Lanning said Oregon is “challenging some guys at different positions” to gauge “their flexibility and see how much they can do for the team.” Finney, the Freshman All-American corner, wasn’t tied to a specific new role by Lanning, but the move appears to be pointing toward the STAR spot, Oregon’s hybrid nickel position. During spring practice, defensive coordinator Chris Hampton said Finney was among the players spending time at nickel.
“ Peyton Woodyard is playing down in the box at times, playing STAR and also being able to play safety. There are several guys with similar examples, including Brandon Finney,” Lanning said during his Wednesday evening press conference. “We have the same expectation for some of our edge players.”
Finney still looks set to play outside corner this season, where he’s already found success, but Oregon is also trying to sort out the STAR role after Jadon Canady’s departure left the starting job open when camp began.
The juggling act isn’t limited to the defense. Lanning also mentioned Dierre Hill Jr. as someone who was doing “multiple things for us today beyond what he’s done at running back.” He added that the same approach is showing up across the roster.
“We have wideouts now who can line up at any wide receiver position. That’s an expectation, especially for guys who have been here.
We have offensive linemen working at tackle and guard,” Lanning said. “Can they handle it, and can we push it to another level?”
Lanning noted that this kind of mixing and matching is normal for August, when coaches can experiment before September brings live games. Still, he made clear that these looks aren’t just for show.
What does a player need before taking on multiple responsibilities?
“Mental acuity. They have to be able to receive knowledge, absorb it and make sense of it,” Lanning said.
“We try to take really complicated things in football and make them simple. If we have guys who can handle that and do it at a high level, then we’re going to be able to see them in some different spots.”
