The Oregon Ducks are gearing up for another exciting season, with their young secondary ready to make waves once again. Last year, the Ducks showcased promising talent at cornerback with Brandon Finney Jr. and Ify Obidegwu leading the charge. This season, the defense is eager for the rest of the squad to step up and continue their impressive trajectory.
However, the Ducks faced some gaps in their secondary after losing key players like Dillon Thieneman, Jadon Canady, and Theran Johnson to the NFL Draft. To address this, new defensive coordinator Chris Hampton strategically tapped into the transfer portal to bolster the roster.
One of the standout additions is Aaron Scott Jr., a 6-foot cornerback from Ohio State. The Ducks had their eyes on Scott Jr. since he was a five-star recruit in 2024. Now, Hampton is ready to see what Scott Jr. can bring to the field this spring.
Scott Jr. was ranked as the No. 36 overall player in the 2024 class, but his time at Ohio State was primarily spent on special teams. Over two seasons with the Buckeyes, he played in 19 games, recording 11 tackles, including one for a loss, and two pass deflections.
Hampton expressed excitement about Scott Jr.'s potential, stating, “He was a great special teams player at Ohio State, and he's come in with the right mindset. He’s working extremely hard.”
Despite not securing Scott Jr. during his initial recruitment, Oregon's coaching staff remained consistent in their approach, which paid off this time around.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning emphasized, "The message really didn't change for Aaron. We pointed out what we've achieved with players in the secondary and how that can shape his future here. He's a really good player, and we're excited to see him grow."
Scott Jr. might not have had extensive playing time with the Buckeyes, but his big game experience is invaluable to Oregon's young secondary. He has the potential to compete with Obidegwu for a spot opposite Finney Jr. or possibly fill the nickel defender role left by Canady. Making a strong impression during spring practice will be crucial, but the coaching staff is confident in his abilities.
Hampton highlighted Scott Jr.'s versatility, noting, “He can play inside and outside. He's quick and has great change of direction. He’s eager to compete for a position.”
Even if Scott Jr. doesn't secure a starting role immediately, his presence adds crucial depth to a secondary that has seen several players move on to the pros. The Ducks are poised for another thrilling season, and Scott Jr. could be a key part of their success.
