Florida’s quarterback battle keeps coming back to the same question, and a recent practice clip only pushed it back into the spotlight.
The competition has already had plenty of different readings. Insider reports have suggested Aaron Philo may hold the edge.
Jon Sumrall has called it a neck-and-neck fight. A chunk of the fan base, meanwhile, still believes Tramell Jones is the better answer.
Then came a fall camp clip that gave fans another chance to argue.
Nick Marcinko of Gator Country posted video from the 20-minute media viewing window showing Philo throwing a deep post to Eric Singleton Jr. It was a routine practice rep on the surface. But the reaction came fast because Singleton had to slow down and wait on the ball before making the catch.

That’s where the old concern about Philo flared right back up: arm strength.
When Philo first got tied to Florida in December, that issue was already on the radar. The assessment at the time was blunt: “Philo is accurate enough and, for better or for worse, has some similarities to Graham Mertz.
The “worse” part is that his arm strength is highly suspect. The 78-yard pass he has against Gardner-Webb was off a screen, and of his 21 completions, only seven were beyond ten yards.
He had an extremely underthrown ball that led to an interception, and even when he did go deep, he wasn’t hitting receivers in stride.”
Seen by itself, one warm-up throw that doesn’t lead a receiver perfectly is hardly a verdict. But because arm strength has long been viewed as Philo’s biggest weakness at Georgia Tech, and because the public clips of him have featured throws like Tuesday’s, it’s easy to see why Florida fans are zeroing in on it.
At the same time, a big arm is not the same thing as a good quarterback. Anthony Richardson and DJ Lagway had all the arm strength in the world but couldn’t complete an eight-yard slant to save his life.
And the public never tells the whole story. Nobody outside the program knows exactly how Philo and Jones look when they’re running the full offense behind closed doors. Jones’ live action with Florida has also been limited to a half against LIU and a half against Kentucky.
Still, the view that surfaced back in April remains part of the conversation: if Philo’s main edge was supposed to be his familiarity with Buster Faulkner’s offense, that advantage seemed less meaningful after the spring game, while Jones’ ceiling still looked higher.
What Florida really wants is simple enough: the best quarterback to win the job. And ideally, that choice is made because he truly is the best option, not because he was already familiar to the staff.
