Texas Just Lost More Edge Rush Help Before Ole Miss

Texas Longhorns face potential lineup shakeup against Ole Miss as key freshman Richard Wesley is sidelined with a significant ankle injury.

Texas’ depth on the edge is getting tested fast, and the latest news on freshman Richard Wesley doesn’t help a Longhorns defense already bracing for life without Colin Simmons.

Wesley will miss Saturday’s game against Ole Miss because of a high ankle sprain, according to OrangeBloods’ Anwar Richardson. Richardson also reported there are concerns behind the scenes that Wesley could be out for the rest of the regular season.

“There are concerns behind the scenes that [Wesley] could miss the remainder of the regular season,” Richardson wrote. “For now, the focus is on treatment in hopes of a speedy recovery.”

That leaves Texas with another major hole at a position group already taking hits. Simmons was listed as doubtful on the SEC’s initial availability report with a high ankle sprain, putting the Longhorns in a bind as they try to slow down Trinidad Chambliss and the Rebels.

Wesley arrived in Austin with plenty of buzz. The Chatsworth, CA native was ranked No. 32 overall in the 2026 recruiting class by 247Sports Composite, and he came in as the No. 6 edge rusher and No. 5 player in California.

He’s appeared in four games this season and recorded seven tackles. With Wesley out and Simmons in jeopardy, Zina Umeozulu, Lance Jackson and Colton Vasek are the players expected to carry most of the load on the edge against Ole Miss.

Mark Ingram Just Added Fuel To Ole Miss Texas Debate

Mark Ingram has added another voice to the growing chatter around Ole Miss Week 8 matchup with Texas, and his read is simple enough: he likes the Rebels. Speaking on the game, the former Alabama star pointed to Ole Miss strong record and quarterback play as reasons to feel good about their chances, while also noting Texas recent losses and the injury concerns hanging over the Longhorns.

The betting market has already shown how closely this one is being watched, with sentiment around the matchup shifting as kickoff approaches. For Ole Miss, the interest goes beyond a single prediction. A win would not only strengthen the Rebels standing in a major SEC statement game, it would also keep the conversation moving around how real this team is when the spotlight gets brightest. Ole Miss Has A Huge Opening In Austin If Its Stars Deliver

Ole Miss heads to Austin with a chance to land the kind of road win that can reshape a season, and the setup looks unusually favorable for the Rebels. Texas is coming off consecutive losses and has been dealing with injuries, which has only sharpened the focus on a handful of Ole Miss players who figure to drive the matchup, from offensive lineman Davis up front to defensive playmaker Perkins and running back Kewan Lacy in the backfield.

The opening is there because Texas has stumbled on both sides of the ball, but Ole Miss still has to take advantage of it. A road game like this rarely hands itself over, and if the Rebels are going to turn a big opportunity into something bigger, their top players will have to match the moment in a setting that could end up defining the rest of the year. Arch Manning Brings New Pressure Into Texas Showdown With Ole Miss

Texas heads into Week 8 carrying more than just the weight of consecutive losses to Oklahoma and Florida. At 4-2, the Longhorns are trying to steady themselves quickly, and Steve Sarkisian said Arch Manning has brought a more edgy edge to practice as the team works through the frustration of back-to-back setbacks.

The timing makes the quarterbacks response especially important with No. 7 Ole Miss next on the schedule. Sarkisian made it clear the focus is not simply on Manning being sharp individually, but on how well he plays alongside his teammates as Texas tries to reset before one of its biggest tests of the season.
