In a thrilling SEC Tournament opener at Bridgestone Arena, the Ole Miss Rebels showcased a defensive masterclass to secure a 76-66 victory over Texas. This win was anchored by a standout performance from Ilias Kamardine, whose decisive euro-step layup with just under a minute and a half left sealed the deal for the Rebels.
From the outset, Ole Miss (13-19, 4-14 SEC) set the tone with a stifling defense that immediately put Texas (18-14, 9-9 SEC) on the back foot. The Rebels' early defensive prowess was evident as they notched three steals and three blocks, setting the stage for a quick 5-0 lead.
Texas managed to claw back within a single possession with just under thirteen minutes remaining in the first half. However, that was the closest the Longhorns would get for the remainder of the half, as Ole Miss continued to apply pressure. The Rebels' defensive stats were impressive, with five blocks and eight steals, while Malik Dia poured in 17 points to help build a 41-30 halftime advantage.
As the second half unfolded, Ole Miss maintained control, consistently holding a five-to-10-point cushion. The Longhorns attempted a late rally, sparked by Jordan Pope's three-pointer that trimmed the deficit to three points at 66-63 with four minutes left.
Yet, the Rebels responded with authority. James Scott's dunk and a crucial tipped-in layup set the stage for Kamardine's game-sealing move.
Next up for Ole Miss is a showdown with Georgia in the Second Round of the SEC Tournament. The game is scheduled for Thursday, March 12, at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast on the SEC Network. Keep up with the action by following @OleMissMBB on social media.
