Georgia Prepares for SEC Tournament Challenge Against Ole Miss
Georgia is gearing up for its Southeastern Conference tournament opener against a surprising Ole Miss squad, following a historic regular season. The Bulldogs, boasting a 22-9 record, have set school records for wins and points scored, with a scoring average that ranks third in Division I at 90.4 points per game.
Head Coach Mike White knows the postseason is a whole new ballgame. "We've got to turn the page quickly," White emphasized.
"The postseason is here, and we have a chance to compete for a championship. We're eager to make our mark in 'The Dance' and aim to keep dancing as long as possible."
Most predictions place Georgia on the seven-eight seed line for the NCAA Tournament, reflecting their strong season performance.
Ole Miss made headlines with a stunning 76-66 victory over 10th-seeded Texas, marking the only upset on the tournament's first day. Despite a challenging season, the Rebels (13-19) showed grit, opening a 12-point lead in the first half. Texas narrowed the gap to three points late in the game, but Ole Miss held firm.
Rebels forward James Scott, who contributed 10 points and nine rebounds, highlighted the team's aggressive mindset: "You've got to throw the first punch."
Malik Dia led Ole Miss with 23 points, while AJ Storr added 18. Their defensive efforts limited Texas to just 35.2% shooting and resulted in only three turnovers.
Ole Miss previously edged Georgia 97-95 in overtime during their regular-season clash, thanks to Patton Pinkins' last-second put-back. Storr was a standout with 27 points in that meeting.
"We didn't come here to Nashville to win just one game," stated Ole Miss coach Chris Beard. "We're focused on taking it one game at a time."
Georgia's strong finish to the regular season, including a decisive 98-88 victory over then-No. 16 Alabama, secured their NCAA Tournament spot.
The Bulldogs have won five of their last six games, a streak sparked by White's strategic lineup changes. Leading scorer Jeremiah Wilkinson (17.3 points per game) now comes off the bench, with Marcus "Smurf" Millender and Kareem Stagg stepping into starting roles.
Wilkinson's impact was evident in their last matchup with Ole Miss, where he scored 32 points, including six 3-pointers.
Kanon Catchings, a standout 6-9 sophomore forward, enters the tournament as the SEC co-player of the week after impressive performances against Alabama and Mississippi State, tallying 55 points and 12 rebounds combined. His career-high 32 points against Alabama was a highlight.
Defensively, the Bulldogs are formidable, averaging 6.2 blocked shots per game, tied with Virginia for the best in Division I. Center Somto Cyril is a key contributor, ranking 10th nationally with 2.4 blocks per game.
As Georgia takes on Ole Miss, fans can expect a thrilling matchup as both teams aim to advance in the SEC tournament.
