Ole Miss is drawing a hard line for Lane Kiffin’s return.
In an email sent to students on Sept. 17, athletics told them that anyone backing LSU will not be allowed into the student section for the Rebels’ Week 3 matchup with the Tigers. The policy takes effect immediately, and Ole Miss made clear that opposing gear or colors will get fans turned away at the entrance or removed if they’re already inside the student section.
The move comes with the No. 9 Rebels set to host No.
7 LSU on Sept. 19 at 6:30 p.m. on ABC at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The matchup already had plenty of heat because Kiffin is back in Oxford as LSU’s coach, and the source material describes him as public enemy No. 1 there after leaving Ole Miss before the College Football Playoff in 2025.
Ole Miss’ decision also follows a recent confrontation involving LSU fans on campus. During an Ole Miss-LSU baseball game on April 11 at Swayze Field, a video surfaced showing an LSU fan in the bleachers in right field, a general admission area where Ole Miss students sit.
The fan, wearing a bright yellow LSU jersey and purple LSU hat, was being escorted out when a drink was sprayed at him. As security tried to get between him and the source of the throw, he charged forward and punched a man with his left hand, then punched him again on the ground before the scuffle was broken up.
The football atmosphere is expected to be anything but ordinary. ESPN’s “College GameDay” will be on site, with Morgan Freeman serving as guest picker. Ole Miss is also rolling out a packed game-day presentation that Drew Ingraham, the school’s Senior Associate AD for External Engagement, and his staff helped put together.
There will be two flyovers. Two C-17 planes will pass over Vaught-Hemingway during the national anthem, and another flyover is scheduled for 8 a.m. for “College GameDay,” this one featuring two military helicopters.
The Rebels are also planning two drone shows. One will be tied to the school’s new “Code Powder” segment between the first and second quarters, which mirrors the “Code Red” light show Ole Miss stages between the third and fourth quarters. SkyWorx is partnering with Ole Miss on the drone display.
Fans will also get flashing wristbands, a feature that was used for the 2025 College Football Playoff game against Tulane - the first game after Kiffin left - and drew strong reviews. Fireworks will be expanded as well.
Ingraham said the whole setup is meant to amplify the game-day experience while the team’s play drives the bigger picture.
“Obviously team success plays a huge role in all of this,” Ingraham said. “Our goal is just to support that. It’s to provide additional in-game enjoyment that is in support of team performance and team success.”
The schedule around campus is loaded from morning to night. “College GameDay” runs from 8-11 a.m. in The Grove, the Walk of Champions is set for 4:15 p.m., gates open at 4:30 p.m., and the national anthem is slated for 6:25 p.m.
“I think the one thing that we are trying to message to folks is give yourself some extra time and arrive early,” Ingraham said. “This is what seems is going to be an all-day affair with GameDay starting at 8 and going to 11, and then you know we just don't anticipate too many folks leaving campus after that.”
