Ole Miss is heading into 2026 with plenty of attention on the offense, but the more intriguing storyline right now might be on the back end of the defense. Jaylon Braxton is back, healthy, and positioned to be a key piece for Pete Golding in his first full season running the program.
That return matters because Braxton’s 2025 season was affected by injuries, something he acknowledged as fall camp opened on Thursday. He said he was not able to stay consistently healthy through the year, and that had an impact on his play. Now, he’s entering this stretch with a very different feeling.
"This is my first season since my freshman year where I have been healthy going into the summer and fall," Braxton said. "I am extremely blessed, and this will give me a lot of confidence going into the season."
For Ole Miss, that kind of stability is welcome news. The Rebels are coming off a massive 2025 campaign that included two playoff wins, one over Tulane and another against SEC foe Georgia. They also enter 2026 with high expectations and two Heisman candidates in Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy.
Still, there’s work to do on defense, especially in the secondary. The 2025 group was solid overall, but the Rebels clearly want more as they try to back up those lofty preseason expectations. Golding, who built his reputation on defense both at Ole Miss and previously at Alabama, now has a veteran corner to lean on as he shapes this team in his own image.
Braxton’s decision to stay in Oxford instead of transferring elsewhere adds another layer to the story. He said the fit with Golding made the choice straightforward.
"I know that the defense that we play in always gets a lot of people to the NFL, so it was a no-brainer for me to stay."
Ole Miss has also added a lot of secondary help through the transfer portal, part of an effort to shore up a position group that was one of the weaker spots in an otherwise historic 2025 season. If the Rebels can get real improvement from both the secondary and the linebacker group, they have the look of a team that can sit near the top of the SEC and maybe even beyond it.
The offense gives them a strong base. But if this team is going to live up to the hype, the defense has to do its part. Braxton could end up being the difference-maker in that secondary.
