That’s where Golding spent plenty of his offseason energy after the Rebels’ 2025 run showed just how far they could go even after many expected them to slide following Jaxson Dart’s departure to the NFL. Instead, Ole Miss surged all the way to two College Football Playoff wins and ended the year one play short of a possible trip to the national championship. Then came another twist, with Lane Kiffin leaving for LSU after the regular season.
Now Golding is trying to tighten up the areas that gave Ole Miss trouble last season, especially on defense. The Rebels had issues against mobile quarterbacks and also had a hard time slowing down some of the SEC’s best receivers. That has made the back end a major point of emphasis.
Ole Miss has had trouble keeping its secondary at a consistently high level for several seasons, and Golding attacked that problem through the transfer portal. Jay Crawford, who came over from Auburn, looks like the leading cornerback heading into 2026. Crawford played a lot as a young player for the Tigers and brings SEC experience with him.
The Rebels also added Joenel Aguero from Georgia. He brings a physical style at safety and is viewed as stronger against the run than in coverage. That toughness should matter for Ole Miss in the kind of SEC games that get decided at the line of scrimmage.
At the same time, Golding did not have to rebuild everything from scratch. Ole Miss kept several important defensive backs from its playoff team, giving the Rebels a blend of proven holdovers and portal additions. Jaylon Braxton and Antonio Kite are set to headline that group after strong 2025 seasons, and Ole Miss will lean on both to generate turnovers and disrupt opposing offenses.
That depth matters because Ole Miss plays fast on offense, which can leave the defense gassed if the secondary can’t hold up. With the pieces Golding added and the returners already in place, the Rebels finally look better equipped to avoid getting beaten deep.
