Ole Miss just landed a big-time playmaker out of the portal - and it’s a name that could make waves in the SEC sooner rather than later.
Darrell Gill Jr., a 6-foot-3, 190-pound wide receiver from Syracuse, officially signed with the Rebels on Wednesday night, becoming the 17th addition to Lane Kiffin’s 2024 transfer class and the ninth on the offensive side of the ball. And make no mistake - this is a major pickup.
Gill isn’t just another name in the portal. According to 247Sports, he’s the No. 6 wide receiver transfer in the country and the No. 27 overall prospect in this year’s cycle.
That’s elite company. Programs like Washington and Ohio State were reportedly in the mix, but it’s Ole Miss that came out on top.
So what are the Rebels getting in Gill? A tall, physical target who’s already shown he can produce at the Power Five level.
Over the last two seasons at Syracuse, Gill racked up 1,006 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 63 catches. Add in his freshman year, and he leaves New York with 70 receptions, 1,136 yards, and eight scores.
He’s got two years of eligibility left, which means he’s not just a short-term fix - he’s someone the Rebels can build around.
What stands out about Gill isn’t just the numbers, though. It’s the way coaches talk about him. Syracuse head coach Fran Brown had high praise for the Texas native, calling him the kind of player who does all the little things right.
“He just listens. He does everything,” Brown said.
“He’s never on any lists - not late to class, not missing weight. He’s done all the things that are required that don’t require talent.
So he gets an A in that, which is the reason why, when it’s time for football, he’s able to excel in football.”
That kind of work ethic paired with his size and production? That’s a combination that should fit right into Kiffin’s offensive system - especially one that’s never been shy about airing it out and letting receivers go make plays.
Gill’s journey is also worth noting. Coming out of Atascocita High School in Texas as part of the 2023 class, he was flying under the radar - unranked and largely overlooked. But he’s clearly developed into a high-level talent, and now he’s getting his shot in one of the most competitive conferences in college football.
For Ole Miss, this is more than just another name in the portal. It’s a sign that the Rebels are continuing to reload with serious weapons. And for Gill, it’s a chance to prove he belongs on the biggest stage.
