Ole Miss walked into Ben Hill Griffin Stadium unbeaten and walked out with its first loss of the season, a 52-28 thumping at the hands of No. 21 Florida on Saturday night.
For a team with College Football Playoff ambitions, this one lands hard. The Rebels didn’t just lose; they got pushed around in a game where too much went wrong on both sides of the ball to ignore.
Trinidad Chambliss still showed up with a big stat line, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep Ole Miss in the fight. He finished 25 of 34 for nearly 350 total yards, threw three total touchdowns and had an interception that came in garbage time.
Deuce Alexander was the other bright spot, hauling in seven catches from Chambliss for 134 yards and a touchdown. Beyond that, the passing game didn’t offer much help.
No other Ole Miss receiver got to 50 yards.
The ground game was even more of a problem. With running back Kewan Lacy sidelined by a shoulder injury, Ole Miss was already dealing with a tough situation.
But not having a single player reach 50 rushing yards made it a real issue. Chambliss led the Rebels on the ground with 44 yards and two touchdowns, which says plenty about how thin the offense was behind him.
That’s the bigger concern here: Chambliss can only carry so much. When the offense asks him to do everything, the cracks start to show, and that’s exactly what happened against Florida.
The bye week now gives Ole Miss a chance to get Lacy healthy, because the depth behind him has not been enough to pick up the slack.
If the offense was stretched thin, the defense was simply overwhelmed. Pete Golding’s unit, which is supposed to be his calling card after years as a defensive coordinator at Alabama and Ole Miss, had a rough night from start to finish.
Florida quarterback Aaron Philo was efficient, completing 16 of 23 passes for over 200 total yards with two touchdowns and no turnovers. But the real damage came on the ground. Florida backs Jadan Baugh and Duke Clark combined for 268 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and that was the difference in a game where the Gators again topped 50 points.
Ole Miss had no answer for that kind of production. Giving up that much on the ground left the Rebels with little chance to stay competitive.
Now the pressure shifts to Golding. He has to get the defense under control, and if that doesn’t happen, the Rebels may need to rethink how those play-calling duties are handled so he can focus on being the head coach.
