Morgan Freeman will be the face of Ole Miss on ESPN’s “College GameDay” this weekend, stepping in as the guest picker for a marquee Week 3 visit to Oxford.
The No. 9 Rebels, 2-0, open SEC play against No.
7 LSU, also 2-0, on Sept. 19 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
ESPN is heading to Oxford for the matchup and will stage its pregame show in The Grove.
Ole Miss announced Freeman’s role on Sept. 17. The 89-year-old actor and filmmaker will join host Rece Davis and analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee and Nick Saban at the desk to help pick the day’s games.
Freeman was born in Memphis and raised in Charleston, Mississippi, about 50 miles southwest of Oxford. His film credits include “The Shawshank Redemption” and “Se7en,” and he’s also a known Ole Miss supporter who has been seen in the crowd at Rebels basketball games.
This will be the third time “College GameDay” has made the trip to Oxford. The other guest pickers for Ole Miss home appearances were Katy Perry in 2014 and Lane Kiffin in 2021.
“College GameDay” airs from 8-11 a.m. CT on ESPN and ESPNU every Saturday during the college football season. When the show has come to Ole Miss before, the set has been placed in the Grove, the tailgating centerpiece in the middle of campus.
The production usually starts arriving on Wednesday, with setup beginning Thursday morning. Building the full set generally takes about five hours.
One of the show’s best-known segments is Pat McAfee’s kicking challenge, which sends one fan from the crowd into a 33-yard field goal attempt for a shot at a major prize, sometimes as much as $1 million. To get in line for the selection, fans need to enter the pit section before the show and pick up a raffle ticket.
A random ticket is drawn around 7:30 a.m. CT.
Participants must be at least 18 and have a physical ID.
Last week, Texas student Conner Kacena-Merrell won $1.2 million after drilling a second kick. He missed his first try for $1 million, then Herbstreit and guest Matthew McConaughey each added $100,000 to the pot for another attempt. Before kicking, Kacena-Merrell said he planned to give half of his winnings to Building Tomorrow, a nonprofit in Indianapolis.
“College GameDay” began as an in-studio program in 1987 with Tim Brando hosting alongside Lee Corso and Beano Cook. It first went on the road in 1993, debuting on campus at Notre Dame for a matchup with Florida State.
Corso retired after Week 1 of the 2025 season at age 91. He spent 38 seasons on the show and became famous for his headgear picks, a tradition he started in 1996. In all, he made 431 headgear picks and went 287-144.
AccuWeather’s forecast for Oxford on GameDay calls for 95 degrees with a 25% chance of rain.
