Ole Miss Fans Now Wait For What Comes Next With AJ Maddox

Ole Miss quarterback AJ Maddox faces legal trouble as he is arrested on serious domestic violence charges, casting a shadow over his promising career.

Ole Miss backup quarterback AJ Maddox was arrested Tuesday morning, according to information obtained by Ole Miss On SI.

The 21-year-old junior was booked at 6:41 a.m. CT and faces a charge of “Simple Domestic Violence - Attempts by physical menace to put a domestic victim in fear of imminent serious bodily harm,” per the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department. No bond amount has been released.

Maddox, listed at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds, is in his third season with the Rebels. He spent the offseason in a competition with Deuce Knight for the backup job, but Knight came out on top and has gotten game action in blowout wins this season.

“I think that developmental phase not only for Maddox, but for Deuce as well, is really important in that room," Pete Golding previously said in April. "Really like the balance there from an athletic standpoint and then obviously from an experience standpoint. More importantly the maturity of how to do it, how to lead and how to be a leader for this team."

On the field, Maddox has appeared in two games this season, both as a sophomore in 2025 against Tulane and The Citadel. He completed his lone pass for 19 yards and added one rushing attempt for eight yards.

A Hattiesburgh, Mississippi native, Maddox was a four-star recruit out of Oak Grove High School in the 2024 class. He originally committed to Texas A&M before switching to Ole Miss before the 2024 season.

His move to Oxford also helped bring in his younger brother, Andrew, now a sophomore defensive tackle at Ole Miss.

Ole Miss Suddenly Has A Real Opening In The Playoff Race

The 12-team College Football Playoff has already changed the way the sport feels, and this season has only sharpened the edge of that reality. Instead of one or two programs separating from the pack, college football has been a weekly shuffle of contenders, with teams like Boise State, Indiana, Miami and Ole Miss all moving through a landscape where no one has yet taken clear control in 2026.

For the Rebels, that chaos is more opportunity than obstacle. Ole Miss has put itself in position to matter in the playoff race, and the broader picture around the SEC suggests the path to a national title bid may be more open than usual. The hard part, as always, is turning a favorable setup into something lasting, especially with so much of the season still waiting to sort itself out. [Read more 🡒]

Ole Miss Can Push Texas To The Brink This Weekend

Texas arrives in Oxford under real pressure after back-to-back losses to unranked opponents, and the timing of this Week 8 matchup could hardly be more awkward. The No. 19 Longhorns now get a visit from No. 7 Ole Miss in what has quickly become a defining test for Steve Sarkisians program, with former coach Urban Meyer going so far as to call it the most important game of Sarkisians career.

For Texas, the stakes go beyond one Saturday in October. Another loss would deepen the damage to a season that was supposed to carry College Football Playoff expectations, and it would only sharpen the scrutiny on a team that entered the year with far bigger ambitions. From Ole Miss side, it is a chance to keep the pressure high and potentially turn a talented opponents season into something far more complicated. [Read more 🡒]

Ole Miss Faces A Bigger Challenge In Texas Than Fans May Realize

Ole Miss is heading into a matchup that Pete Golding sees as more formidable than the record might suggest. The Rebels defensive coordinator and head coach called Texas an elite group, pointing to the Longhorns win over Ohio State, the fact that they reached the top spot in the rankings earlier this season and the presence of quarterback Arch Manning as reasons this trip deserves full attention.

Golding also spent time on the chess match ahead, outlining how Ole Miss plans to defend a Texas offense that can make teams pay when it gets rolling. Just as important for the Rebels, he touched on the availability of Kewan Lacy, Makhi Frazier and JT Lindsey, injury updates that could matter just as much as any schematic wrinkle once kickoff arrives.
