ESPN’s College GameDay brought its usual Saturday morning circus to The Grove in Oxford, and Pat McAfee’s kicking contest ended up delivering the day’s biggest talking point before the LSU-Ole Miss game even kicked off.
The spotlight landed on Ole Miss freshman James Whitehead, a finance major who said he had never kicked a football before. Whitehead went barefoot from 33 yards and drilled the attempt, good for a $1 million prize.
Then McAfee tried to make the moment official on the oversized novelty check, and the celebration took a hilarious turn. Live on air, he accidentally added three zeroes instead of one, briefly turning Whitehead’s prize into a $100 million payday on paper.
The mistake raced around online almost immediately. One post joked that somebody needed to take the pen away before McAfee bankrupted himself on national television. “I hope this is legally binding,” one fan wrote in response.
“He was probably smoking again. It happens,” another commenter joked, pointing to recent unrelated chatter around McAfee’s on-air behavior.
McAfee fixed the check before the segment ended, and Whitehead’s actual payout stayed at $1 million. He said he plans to split the money with a friend who handed him the winning entry ticket just seconds before his name was called.
The kicking contest has become one of GameDay‘s biggest weekly draws since it launched in 2023. This season, Home Depot joined as a matching sponsor, helping push some of the prizes far beyond McAfee’s own money alone.
Just last week, a Texas student won $1.2 million after Kirk Herbstreit and Matthew McConaughey added extra cash following a second-chance try.
Whitehead’s win added another memorable moment to a contest that has already handed out millions in its short run, while McAfee’s check mishap gave fans something to laugh about long before LSU and Ole Miss took the field.
