Ole Miss Faces A Bigger Test Than Just Beating Texas

Deck: As the Ole Miss Rebels gear up to face the Texas Longhorns, their aspirations extend beyond just a single victory, eyeing a potential run in the College Football Playoff.

Ole Miss has spent the last two weeks looking like a team that can do more than just survive the SEC grind. The Rebels hammered Vanderbilt and Missouri by a combined 83-20, a run that makes the 52-28 loss to Florida look more like a stumble than a turning point.

Now comes a much bigger road challenge. Ole Miss heads to face No.

19 Texas, a test made even sharper by the fact that Florida also gave the Longhorns their first home loss since 2024. That alone would make this a meaningful night.

But for Pete Golding’s team, the mission reaches past the idea of simply taking down Texas in Austin.

A few years ago, a win like this might have felt like the peak of the season for Ole Miss. Not now. In 2026, the Rebels are thinking on a different scale, with their attention fixed on the College Football Playoff.

That doesn’t mean they get to skip the hard part. Texas is still a dangerous opponent, and it arrives after back-to-back losses to unranked teams.

Ole Miss, meanwhile, is walking into the game with confidence after dominating Missouri. Golding has been driving home a week-by-week approach all season, and he’s made it clear he wants his players focused on the work in front of them, not on what they did the week before.

“And then there’s a fine line to me on building on confidence. There’s a lot from Saturday that we did really well that we got to continue to do well, and they should have developed some confidence by doing it.

But that confidence came from their preparation and how they practiced, and they came out and made their layup," Golding said. "...

So I think it’s building on playing well and knowing you got to do it week in and week out while still looking in the mirror... And we got to be at our best every Saturday to give ourselves our best shot at what our goal is."

That balance - confidence without drift, momentum without complacency - is where Ole Miss sits right now. The defense just turned in a strong outing, but nobody in that locker room is going to assume last week carries over on its own. The offense will also have its hands full against Texas’ defense, which could keep this one tight.

Still, the bigger picture is clear. Ole Miss is using its CFP experience as fuel, and Golding’s team seems to understand that the path forward is built one Saturday at a time.

A win over Texas would be a statement. More than that, it would just be another step toward the goal they’re really chasing.

Texas Just Lost More Edge Rush Help Before Ole Miss

Texas is heading into its matchup with Ole Miss already thinner off the edge, with defensive end Colin Simmons likely to miss the game because of a high ankle sprain. The Longhorns are also expected to be without freshman edge rusher Richard Wesley, who has been ruled out with the same injury.

Wesley has played in four games this season and has seven tackles, and his absence leaves another rotation spot to be filled as Texas sorts out its pass-rush plan. Other defenders will have to absorb those snaps, and the Longhorns may be dealing with that shortage for longer than just one week. [Read more 🡒]

Mark Ingram Just Added Fuel To Ole Miss Texas Debate

Mark Ingram has added another voice to the growing Week 8 conversation around Ole Miss and Texas, and he did not sound like someone looking for a coin-flip. The former Alabama star pointed to Ole Misss strong record and the play of its quarterback as reasons for confidence, while also noting that Texas has been dealing with recent losses and injury concerns. With the matchup drawing plenty of attention beyond Oxford, the debate has only gotten louder as the game approaches.

The larger point is how much respect Ole Miss is starting to command in a matchup that still has plenty of market skepticism attached to it. Ingrams view lines up with the belief that the Rebels have enough momentum to handle the moment, even if the outside projections are not all moving in the same direction. For Ole Miss fans, it is another small sign that this game is being taken seriously, and that the conversation around it is far from settled. [Read more 🡒]

Ole Miss Has A Huge Opening In Austin If Its Stars Deliver

Ole Miss heads into Austin with a chance to make a real statement, and the timing could hardly be better. Texas is dealing with consecutive losses and a growing injury list, which opens the door for the Rebels to test themselves against a brand-name opponent that has looked vulnerable on both sides of the ball. For Ole Miss, this is the kind of road game that can shape how the rest of the season is viewed, especially with several key contributors expected to be in the spotlight.

The focus will be on whether the Rebels top players can turn that opening into something bigger. Offensive lineman Davis, defensive standout Perkins and running back Kewan Lacy are among the names expected to matter most as Ole Miss tries to control the line of scrimmage and force Texas to answer questions it has not solved lately. A strong showing would not just add another quality win, it could give Ole Miss a season-defining result in a game where the opportunity is there for the taking. [Read more 🡒]
