Ole Miss has spent August working through two scrimmages inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, and for Florida transfer Sharif Denson, that kind of preseason routine has already made an impression.
Denson said the mock-game setup was new to him after three seasons with the Gators, where he appeared in all 36 games and made 17 starts. The veteran defensive back said the extra run before the opener helped settle him in.
"It was different for sure, coming from Florida," Denson said. "I never did that before, but I feel like it definitely slowed down the anxiety a little bit when game time came, because you already went through everything."
Now at Ole Miss, Denson is one of 13 new defensive additions the Rebels brought in through the transfer portal this offseason. He sees a unit with real upside.
"This is a very talented defense, from top to bottom. We're very good in all positions, pretty good depth in all positions," Denson said. "As long as we come out and execute, the way that we know how to execute and play defense that we know how to play, it's going to be hard to beat us."
Pete Golding’s presence has also stood out to him as the Rebels continue shaping the defense around a wave of change. Denson said the system has been a learning experience, but one he’s leaned into as he prepares for his final college season.
"It's a bit complex, but if you understand the why, then you can better understand how to do certain things," Denson said.
At Florida, Denson totaled more than 95 tackles, along with two sacks and one interception. Ole Miss has also seen major turnover in its secondary after the depature of many players from the 2025 season, making the influx of experienced talent even more important.
The Rebels open the season against No. 24 Louisville on Sunday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m. CT at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
