7 LSU on Saturday night in Oxford, the current Rebels coach said Monday that the week has the feel of a school event with too many moving parts. The matchup is scheduled for about 7:30 p.m.
ET on ABC, and it comes with plenty of extra noise: former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin is returning to town, security will be an issue, and ESPN’s College GameDay will also be in Oxford.
That’s exactly the kind of environment Golding wants his team to block out.
“We’re going to have to prepare the right way this week, and get locked in and get focused,” Pete Golding said. “(A) lot going on, you got (College) GameDay, you got so much other stuff.
To me, it’s like high school homecoming for these dudes, like if you focus on the wrong s-, right, that homecoming dance ain’t very fun after you get your butt beat on a Friday night. We got to make sure we’re doing everything right throughout the week to get the outcome that we want.”
Golding’s point was simple: the Rebels can’t let the week become about anything other than football.
The game itself carries huge stakes for both sides, and the buildup in Oxford has already become part of the story. As Golding sees it, all the outside attention only matters if Ole Miss lets it.
