Holly Rowe and Laura Rutledge shared sideline duties for Saturday’s Ole Miss-LSU matchup, but one quick ESPN cut turned into the clip everybody was talking about.
Rowe was down on the field handling injury updates and checking in on real-time changes from both benches, while Rutledge was working the live reports and coaching adjustments during the broadcast. Then a short sequence from the telecast started making the rounds online almost immediately.
The clip showed Rowe in a tight close-up as she spoke into an ESPN microphone on the field. It then cut to Rutledge in a wider, brighter shot with the band behind her. That 11-second transition was quickly called “diabolical” and “brutal” across X.
“That ESPN cut from Holly Rowe to Laura Rutledge was DIABOLICAL,” one post said.
“Lmao… they cut from Holly Rowe to Laura Rutledge! Absolutely brutal,” a second post added.
The reaction comes with Rowe still in the middle of the fallout from last week’s Texas-Ohio State game. After Texas’ 24-23 comeback win, she tried to interview Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian during the celebration, but he cut her off by shouting “Texas fight,” then walked away.
After that moment, an offensive AI-generated video circulated online that falsely showed Sarkisian slapping Rowe. The situation grew louder when Texas quarterback Arch Manning was asked about the viral clips at a press conference. He smiled and said he laughed, calling the edited clip “hilarious.”
Manning later apologized on Instagram, saying his comments were highly insensitive. Rowe accepted that apology after speaking with him privately and said they would move forward with respect. Sarkisian also said he deeply regretted his impatience and strongly condemned the violent AI video.
This time, Rowe got the interview she was after, with Ole Miss beating LSU 32-24.
