Lane Kiffin didn’t let the Ole Miss loss sit quietly.
On Wednesday, the LSU coach took another shot at the Rebels while talking about Saturday’s tight game in Oxford, where Ole Miss edged LSU. Kiffin labeled that matchup Ole Miss’ “Super Bowl,” a pointed remark coming after the defeat to the program he once coached.
He explained his view like this: “If it wasn’t for the name, Ole Miss, and if it was more of a traditional name that we were playing, we hadn’t coached at before, how would everybody be feeling if, in your third game of your first year of a program, you went to Ohio State and came all the way back?” Kiffin asked in the media session, per On3's Daniel Hager.
“The quarterback didn’t play very - ours [Sam Leavitt] didn’t play very well, and theirs played lights out. I’m sure after three games, he would be named the Heisman winner.
“So, I think when you look at it that way and say, OK, man, their Super Bowl, then all the stuff around it, all the energy in the stadium, everything, and we’re right there at the end with multiple chances to win the game. We got to learn from that and finish when we’re in that type of situation again.”
The comment lands with extra sting because it came after LSU lost to Ole Miss, and it set off another round of talk around what the game meant. If LSU ends up having a worse season than Ole Miss, Saturday’s matchup could look even bigger in hindsight.
LSU is back on the field this week with a home game against Texas A&M on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
