Dr Pepper is leaning all the way into Lane Kiffin’s reputation.
Season 9 of the “Dr Pepper Fansville” promotion begins this week, and the new spot puts the LSU head coach in the crosshairs. On Thursday, Dr Pepper released a trailer for a commercial called “Illegal Lane Change,” and it shows “Sheriff” Brian “The Boz” Bosworth pulling Kiffin over beside a football stadium.
As Kiffin rolls down the window, Bosworth fires off, “You can’t keep doing this!”
The joke is plain enough. It’s a nod to the multiple times Kiffin has made his way to another program while still under contract, including his move to LSU while he was still coaching Ole Miss just before the College Football Playoff. That decision turned him into a villain for Ole Miss fans and made him unpopular with plenty of others across college football, though Kiffin has brushed off the criticism.
The reaction online showed exactly how well the ad lands with people who have long viewed Kiffin as the sport’s favorite agitator. “Unfortunately this is extremely funny.
It’s Kiffin’s world and we are just living in it,” one user on X wrote. Another said, “Not a Kiffin fan but this is funny,” while a third added, “Lmaooooooo dear lord The biggest troll on earth,” followed by “Never liked Lane but this is funny.”
One more post called it, “Unfortunately this is pretty funny.” Another joked, “This is gonna go triple platinum if he ever gets a DUI.”
Kiffin heads into the 2026 season with LSU ranked No. 11 and opening against unranked Clemson next week. Two weeks after that, he’ll be back in Oxford, Mississippi to face his former team in what could be one of the most hate-watched games of the year. LSU also has major matchups later on against Alabama, Texas and Tennessee.
After everything LSU has already dealt with and the money it has committed to Kiffin, missing the College Football Playoff this season is not a mistake the program can afford.
