The spotlight at LSU is already hot, and Lane Kiffin hasn’t coached a game there yet.
With the college football season about a month away and the 12-team College Football Playoff race about to take shape, the Tigers are among the programs carrying real expectations. LSU moved on from Brian Kelly after he failed to get the program to the CFP, then brought in Kiffin from Ole Miss. That move raised the stakes immediately.
On ESPN’s “First Take,” Jordan Rodgers said Kiffin is the coach facing the most pressure to make the playoff, and Rodgers made clear that the clock starts now, not later.
“Lane Kiffin has a lot to prove,” Rodgers said. “Step one, they’ve got to get to a national championship because they have to be better than his team at Ole Miss was last year with less resources.
He’s been gifted everything he wants at LSU. It’s time to pay that back.”
Kiffin’s résumé already puts him among the sport’s top coaches, but LSU is a different kind of test. He walks into a program with the brand, the boosters and the money to chase championships, which leaves very little room for excuses if the season goes off track.
That’s part of why the hire feels so bold. LSU didn’t just bring in a proven coach; it took on a high-risk, high-reward bet with a short fuse attached.
There’s also no shortage of baggage. Kiffin’s exit from Ole Miss drew heavy backlash, and while he said he regretted how he handled it, plenty of fans didn’t buy that as enough. Tennessee fans remember a similar ending from his departure there, and Kiffin’s career has long been defined by a willingness to live in the spotlight while looking out for himself first.
At LSU, though, the standard is bigger than simply making the playoff. The expectation is a national championship. That’s the bar Kiffin has inherited, and it’s the pressure he now has to answer right away.
