Lane Kiffin Faces NFL Threat Over Rising LSU Coaching Star

As NFL teams circle, a prized assistant on Lane Kiffins former staff may be on the move again-before ever coaching a snap at LSU.

Charlie Weis Jr. is becoming a name to watch as the NFL coaching carousel begins to spin. With teams starting to map out their staffs for the upcoming cycle, league sources are confirming what’s been bubbling under the surface: the interest in Weis Jr. is real-and it’s growing.

Currently the offensive coordinator at Ole Miss, Weis Jr. has been surfacing in early conversations around NFL vacancies, most notably with the Philadelphia Eagles. As they look to reshape their offensive staff following the decision to remove Kevin Patullo from play-calling duties, the Eagles have reportedly reached out about Weis Jr. While Patullo is expected to stay in a reduced role, Philly is clearly on the hunt for fresh offensive leadership-and Weis Jr. fits the mold of the kind of innovative mind they’re looking for.

This isn’t just about filling a vacancy. The Eagles have shown they can reload a staff and get immediate results.

After a late-season collapse in 2023, head coach Nick Sirianni brought in Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio-and the payoff was massive, culminating in a Super Bowl run in 2024. That kind of turnaround has made the offensive coordinator spot in Philly one of the more attractive gigs in the league, and it’s also raised the bar for who gets serious consideration.

Weis Jr. is clearing that bar with room to spare.

At 32, Weis Jr. has already crafted one of the most explosive offenses in college football. Since arriving at Ole Miss in 2022, he’s turned the Rebels into a scoring machine.

His 2024 offense didn’t just light up the scoreboard-it rewrote the school record books. New highs in total offense, passing yards, and yards per play came alongside national top-tier rankings in scoring, efficiency, and completion percentage.

That kind of output earned him the Graphite Award, given to the SEC’s top offensive play caller.

But Weis Jr.’s appeal goes beyond just the numbers. He’s got a track record of developing talent at the quarterback position-most notably Jaxson Dart, who became a first-round pick of the New York Giants after thriving in Weis Jr.’s system.

He also helped elevate Trinidad Chambliss into a legitimate NFL prospect. That kind of developmental success has caught the attention of NFL front offices.

The Giants, in particular, have reportedly looked into bringing Weis Jr. aboard, a move that would reunite him with Dart at the next level.

Coaching under Lane Kiffin and navigating the high-stakes environment of the College Football Playoff has only sharpened Weis Jr.’s edge. He’s been in pressure-packed situations, and he’s delivered. That experience, combined with his offensive acumen, makes him one of the more intriguing names in this year’s coaching cycle.

Even with NFL interest heating up, Weis Jr. has already made his next move at the college level-agreeing to a three-year, $7.5 million deal with LSU. He’s expected to head to Baton Rouge following Ole Miss’ CFP run.

Still, in a league always searching for the next great offensive mind, Weis Jr. is firmly on the radar. Whether he makes the leap this offseason or not, his name isn’t going away anytime soon.
