Georgias Fast Start Turned Oxford Into An Ugly Scene

Ole Miss fans resorted to drastic measures during a heated game against Georgia, causing a temporary halt with their protests.

OXFORD - Ole Miss fans let their frustration spill onto the field Saturday after a pass interference call against the Rebels during Georgia’s fast start in Oxford.

Georgia had already raced to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter when officials flagged Jaylon Braxton for pass interference on a Gunner Stockton throw intended for Craig Dandridge. Braxton appeared to turn his head and make a play on the ball, but the flag came after a small amount of hand-fighting on the play.

The reaction from the stands came quickly. After the call, fans began tossing objects, mostly trash, onto the field, forcing a delay. The game was paused for roughly six minutes while things were cleared and sorted out.

Ole Miss also flashed a message on the Vaught-Hemingway video board warning fans after the incident.

The crowd’s anger had been building before the trash started flying. On the previous drive, Ole Miss had an interception of Stockton wiped out when officials called roughing the passer on the defense. The call was viewed as questionable at best, and it came on a play where it appeared the Ole Miss defender hit Stockton just as he was releasing the ball.

Georgia then added to the frustration by scoring again before halftime, stretching the lead to 28-0.

The scene brought back memories of other college football delays caused by fan behavior. One of the most infamous came in the 2021 Tennessee-Ole Miss game, when Vols fans threw trash, golf balls and mustard bottles onto the field and delayed play for nearly 20 minutes. It also happened again in 2024 during Alabama-LSU.

Depending on how the rest of the game unfolds, the question now is whether the behavior in Oxford stops there.

Georgia Fans Got An Ugly Glimpse Of The Oxford Atmosphere

Vaught-Hemingway Stadium delivered the kind of scene that can spill beyond the lines of a football game, as Ole Miss fans reacted to a pass interference call by sending trash and bottles onto the field. The pause lasted several minutes while officials and stadium staff tried to get the situation under control and asked the crowd to stop, turning a routine penalty into a jarring interruption.

For a program that prides itself on one of the SECs most charged home environments, the moment became an ugly snapshot of how quickly a loud atmosphere can cross a line. The incident drew widespread attention and criticism on social media, leaving the Rebels to deal with the football fallout and the optics of a night that many outside Oxford will remember for the wrong reasons. Lane Kiffin Has Ole Miss Fans Watching Alabama For One Reason

Alabamas trip to Baton Rouge has become must-watch viewing for Ole Miss fans, even if the Rebels are not on the field. The No. 5 Crimson Tide meeting No. 14 LSU carries the usual weight of a rivalry game, but it also has College Football Playoff implications that could ripple through the race Ole Miss is chasing, which is why every twist in that matchup will be followed closely in Oxford.

Lane Kiffin has his own stake in the outcome, too, with LSU in his first year and matching Alabamas record entering the game. For Ole Miss supporters, the interest goes beyond standings and into Kiffins personal history, because he is still looking for his first win against Alabama as a head coach. Whether that changes in Baton Rouge or not, the result is one Rebels fans will be tracking with plenty of attention. [Read more 🡒]

Ole Miss Faces Huge Georgia Test With One Big Complication

Saturday night in Oxford already had the feel of a measuring-stick game, and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit only added to that by tabbing Georgia vs. Ole Miss as the Week 10 college football game to watch. The matchup brings together No. 2 Georgia and No. 10 Ole Miss, with the Rebels carrying a 16-game home winning streak into a 7:30 p.m. ET kickoff on ABC.

The challenge for Lane Kiffins team got a lot steeper with the news that All-America running back Kewan Lacy will be out because of injury. Ole Miss has built real momentum at home, but against a Georgia defense and a top-five opponent, replacing Lacys production changes the feel of the night before it even starts. [Read more 🡒]
