Dae’Quan Wright is in a holding pattern, and the NFL hasn’t given him an answer yet.
According to a report from Adam Schefter on Wednesday, the free-agent tight end is still waiting to hear whether he’s eligible to play this season. Wright, who spent time with the Cleveland Browns during the offseason, had hoped to land at LSU, but that path shut down after the SEC threatened to expel LSU for adding professional players.
The wrinkle now is that Wright never actually signed with LSU or joined its roster. That detail matters, and his camp is treating it that way. Schefter reported that Wright’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said multiple teams are interested in signing him while Wright also weighs his legal options.
This has become a major talking point in college football over the past couple of weeks, and Wright appears to be stuck in the middle of it. He’s hoping the fact that he never officially got on LSU’s roster keeps the door open for him to play, but there’s still no final word from the league.
Wright’s connection to LSU’s former coaching lane runs through Lane Kiffin, the coach he played for at Ole Miss during his last two seasons. In that stretch, Wright put up 66 catches for 1,029 yards and nine touchdowns.
One of those grabs came in a big moment against LSU last year: a fourth-down conversion that helped lift the Rebels past the Tigers.
For now, though, the reunion with Kiffin is off the table. And with the NFL still not deciding his status, Wright’s next move remains up in the air.
