Week 10 in college football doesn’t waste time. The schedule is loaded with games that can reshape the playoff picture, and six of them feature ranked teams on both sidelines. For contenders in the SEC, Big Ten, and Big 12, this is the kind of Saturday that can turn a promising season into a real path to the postseason - or knock a team right out of the conversation.
Start in the Big 12, where Utah and BYU are set for a Holy War with first place on the line. Utah sits atop the league after hammering Cincinnati, while BYU is tied with Texas Tech for second after getting past Arizona State.
The Cougars haven’t looked as sharp since beating Notre Dame, and the stakes are obvious: the winner gets a direct route to Arlington and then, potentially, the College Football Playoff. The Utes are still undefeated, and this is the kind of test that says plenty about whether that stays true.
The SEC brings its own elimination drama. In Death Valley, two-loss rivals square off in what amounts to a playoff knockout game.
Both teams have already taken two losses, and a third could be enough to end the conversation. The winner gets credit for one huge quality win and moves into the clearest position among the playoff hopefuls.
There’s even a slim path for a three-loss SEC team, but the loser here would still need to run the table from that point forward.
Out in the Big Ten, Oregon and Ohio State are suddenly staring at a game with massive consequences. Oregon is still in the mix for Indy after taking down ranked Northwestern, and the Ducks arrive with momentum.
Ohio State, meanwhile, comes in after a costly second loss at USC, a game shaped in part by some very squirrely quarterback play from Julian Sayin replacement Luke Fahey. Home field might help the Buckeyes.
It might not. Either way, this one could decide whether the preseason No.
1 Buckeyes keep their playoff hopes alive or whether preseason No. 2 Oregon takes control of the postseason picture.
Kentucky’s trip to Tennessee carries plenty of weight too, especially after Will Stein’s debut season has the Wildcats in first place in the SEC. Now comes the hard part: trying to pull off an upset on Rocky Top against a Tennessee team that badly needs the win after a surprise loss at South Carolina.
Kentucky still has Florida, Missouri, and Louisville waiting later, so there’s added pressure to cash in here. Tennessee, meanwhile, is leaning on tough defense and one of the better rushing attacks in college football.
Notre Dame also lands in the spotlight with a massive chance against No. 1 Miami.
An Irish win would give them arguably the best performance in college football this season and push them firmly into the playoff conversation. A loss could be devastating.
Notre Dame already fell by four points at ranked BYU, and the rest of the schedule doesn’t offer much comfort. If the Irish end up with two losses against the only real quality teams on the slate, the debate could go against them.
Then there’s Georgia and Ole Miss, a matchup that should have plenty of eyes on it after both teams played one-score games twice a year ago. Georgia backed up its standing as the SEC’s best overall team with a pounding of Florida, while Ole Miss turned in a strong showing against Auburn.
The Rebels already have two losses, to now unranked Florida and resurgent Texas, and need something impressive here to strengthen their case. They may find ways to slow Georgia’s passing game, which hasn’t been lighting it up lately.
Georgia, for its part, owns a win over Alabama but also has a loss to unranked Auburn, and another defeat would only muddy the SEC race even more.

Ole Miss Faces Huge Georgia Test With One Big Complication
Saturday night in Oxford already had the feel of a measuring-stick moment, and ESPNs Kirk Herbstreit only sharpened the focus by naming Georgia at Ole Miss as the Week 10 college football game to watch. The matchup brings together a No. 2 Bulldogs team and a No. 10 Rebels squad that has been tough to beat at home, riding a 16-game winning streak inside its own stadium.
The timing, though, comes with a major wrinkle for Ole Miss. The Rebels are set to take the field at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC without All-America running back Kewan Lacy because of injury, leaving a huge hole in a game that already demanded near-perfect execution. Against a Georgia defense and a playoff-level opponent, how Ole Miss adjusts in the backfield may end up being every bit as important as the atmosphere in the stadium. [Read more 🡒]
College GameDay Just Handed Kentucky Fans A Tennessee Debate
Week 10s College GameDay chatter has already spilled into the kind of conversation SEC fans love to have, with several commentators and the guest picker weighing in on a full slate that includes Ohio State, Minnesota, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, LSU, Utah and Notre Dame. The picks come with the usual mix of logic and gut feel, from defense and home-field edge to the impact of missing players, giving the segment the familiar feel of a Saturday morning debate rather than anything close to a settled forecast.
For Kentucky fans, though, the Tennessee pick is the one that tends to linger, because any national discussion involving the Vols has a way of circling back to the SEC race and the ripple effects around the league. The predictions are only opinions, of course, but they still add another layer to a weekend already loaded with pressure points, and they leave just enough room for fans to argue over which side of the Tennessee discussion deserves the benefit of the doubt. Lane Kiffin Has Ole Miss Fans Watching Alabama For One Reason
Alabamas trip to Baton Rouge has Ole Miss fans paying close attention, and not just because the Crimson Tide are sitting No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings. The matchup with No. 14 LSU carries the usual weight of a longstanding rivalry, but it also has a direct bearing on the playoff picture, which is enough to make this one matter well beyond the usual SEC weekend.
For Lane Kiffin, the game adds another layer. In his first year at LSU, he is trying to get his first win against Alabama as a head coach, and the Tigers enter with the same record as the Tide. For Ole Miss fans, the interest is obvious: any result in this one could ripple through the conference race and the playoff chase, and Kiffins latest shot at Alabama is part of the reason the whole league will be watching.
