Wyatt Young's Painful Postgame Reaction Says It All After OSU Loss

Amid a nail-biting finish, Wyatt Young's crucial touchdown was overshadowed by a game-changing penalty, leaving Oklahoma State with a narrow defeat and lingering remorse.

AMES, Iowa - Oklahoma State left Jack Trice Stadium with a 51-49 loss to Iowa State, and one of the game’s biggest moments turned into a painful lesson for Wyatt Young.

Young appeared to have delivered the go-ahead touchdown on a 5-yard catch from Drew Mestemaker with 13 seconds left, putting the Cowboys ahead 52-49. But the celebration didn’t last.

The score was wiped out by an unsportsmanlike penalty on Young, and OSU was forced to kick from its own 23-yard line on the next snap. The Cyclones closed it out from there.

Afterward, Young apologized on social media.

OSU coach Eric Morris said Young “is beating himself up” after the penalty.

Morris said the moment was especially tough because Young has been dependable since arriving on campus and usually handles pressure well.

Young, the team’s leading receiver, has been a steady presence in the passing game since he arrived on campus. He routinely shows emotion after touchdowns or big catches.

Morris was asked recently about Young’s style.

Saturday’s loss wasn’t decided by Young alone. OSU was forced to kick from its own 23-yard line, and it was returned to the Iowa State 35. The Cyclones then finished with a 33-yard field goal by Kyle Konrardy’s last-second kick to win it.

The Cowboys also had to overcome a rough stretch on special teams. A muffed punt and a failed attempt to fall on a surprise onside kick gave Iowa State 10 points. Sam Geltner missed his first field goal this season after starting with 16 consecutive makes.

Still, the offense kept OSU in it.

The Cowboys never threatened the Cyclones defensively. Iowa State finished with the most yards, 361, against a Big 12 opponent since getting 646 against Texas Tech in 2014. It also scored 31 points, the most in a league game since beating Kansas 37-6 in 2020.

For all the damage, the game came down to one final sequence - and one penalty that erased what looked like the winning play. As Mestemaker put it, Young “is beating himself up” over it.

Oklahoma State Scored 49 And Still Left Fans With One Big Fear

For much of the afternoon, Oklahoma State looked like it had enough offense to survive almost anything. Drew Mestemaker threw for 323 yards and five touchdowns, Caleb Hawkins piled up 275 yards of total offense with three scores, and the Cowboys kept answering Iowa State punch for punch in a game that turned into a track meet almost immediately.

But even with all that production, the finish left a familiar knot in the stomach. Iowa State kept hanging around behind Aiden Floras 221 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Jaylen Raynor accounted for four total touchdowns, and the Cowboys were still left chasing in the final seconds of a 51-49 loss that showed just how thin the margin can be when the defense cannot get one last stop. Oklahoma States 2026-27 Schedule Sets Up A Brutal Stretch Fans Will Notice

Oklahoma State has its 2026-27 mens basketball slate in hand, and it gives fans a full look at the road ahead. The complete schedule includes dates, opponents, game times and locations, with a mix of home dates and road trips that will shape how the Cowboys navigate the season from start to finish.

The release also maps out the conference grind in a way that should immediately jump out to anyone tracking the Big 12 race. There is a neutral-site meeting with Oklahoma in Oklahoma City on Dec. 12, and the season closes with the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, from March 9-13, leaving plenty of pressure points for a team that will have to manage a demanding stretch before the postseason even begins. Oklahoma State Wasted A Shootout After One Unit Fell Apart

Oklahoma State got the kind of offensive day that usually travels, with Caleb Hawkins pounding out 194 rushing yards and three touchdowns and Justin Bowick adding seven catches for 124 yards and two scores in a wild one at Jack Trice Stadium. In a game that turned into a track meet, the Cowboys had enough firepower to hang with Iowa State possession for possession and still came up just short in a 51-49 loss.

The problem was that one phase never held up its end. Special teams bled away momentum in the first half with a missed field goal, a failed onside kick recovery and a muffed punt, and those hidden-yardage mistakes loomed large in a game where every snap felt like it mattered. For a team that did plenty on offense, the frustration is that the margin came down to the sort of breakdowns that can sink even the best shootout effort. [Read more 🡒]
