Scott Frost isn’t looking for sympathy, and he knows better than to expect it. UCF heads into another tough road test Saturday at No. 18 Oklahoma State still dealing with a battered lineup, but the Knights are trying to keep the focus on what’s in front of them rather than the names missing from it.
The injury list has been a moving target for weeks. UCF was already without four starters against Houston - quarterback Alonza Barnett III, right guard Owen Spell, wide receiver Duane Thomas Jr. and linebacker Lewis Carter - and the setback pile grew again in the 27-17 loss to the No.
22 Cougars. Center Jacob Maiava went down with a lower-body injury late in the first half and was carted to the locker room, though Frost said X-rays were OK.
Linebacker Jayden Jennings left with an undisclosed shoulder injury, and quarterback Keyone Jenkins, who filled in for Barnett, dealt with cramping in the second half while also playing through a high ankle sprain. Tight end Dylan Wade has been limited for several games with an undisclosed injury.
“Some years you get through really clean and other years there’s a rash of things,” Frost said Monday. “Hopefully, we’re through the worst of it. I’m glad we have the depth we have and we’re going to need it.”
The loss at Houston stung in more ways than one. UCF built a 17-0 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter, looked in control, and then watched the game flip hard. Houston scored 27 straight points over the final 21 minutes and walked away with the win.
“We played the type of game we wanted and were in the position where we wanted to be. Some of the breaks went our way and you look up midway through the third, and we’re up three scores,” said Frost.
“We can never get the momentum back, particularly with so many guys nicked up or out. That’s football.
We got to find a way (to win the game). We’ve got another unbelievable opportunity against a really good team this week.”
There is still some hope that help could be on the way, though not necessarily in time for Saturday. Frost said Barnett is unlikely to return for this week’s game, and Carter is also expected to miss it after sitting out the past two contests.
Maiava is considered questionable after what Frost described as a soft-tissue injury. Thomas, who led the team in receiving last season, has yet to play in 2026, but Frost said there’s “a chance” he could return.
The timing doesn’t get any easier. After the trip to Stillwater, UCF has an open date before hosting No.
8 BYU on Oct. 24.
Oklahoma State brings a very different challenge. The Cowboys lost their opener to Tulsa, then ripped off three straight wins, including a 39-31 upset of then-No.
5 Oregon on Sept. 12.
At 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play, they own the conference’s top offense, powered by North Texas transfer quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who is averaging more than 310 passing yards per game.
UCF’s road issues only add to the pressure. The Knights have dropped 11 straight away from home since 2024, the second-longest streak in the country behind Stanford and Ball State, who have each lost 13 in a row.
Even so, the message inside the UCF locker room is steady.
“Every football team has adversity, whether you’re undefeated or not,” said linebacker Jahleel Culbreath. “We’re football players.
We’re grown men. We have to handle adversity.
We’re handling it very well in the locker room.”
Frost said the group hasn’t splintered under the strain.
“These guys aren’t going to fracture. These guys are tight and close-knit,” Frost said of his team.
“I don’t think they’re going to get frustrated. We’re a 3-2 football team that’s lost two road games to ranked opponents.
If anybody’s discouraged or anything, I’d be shocked.”
UCF travels to face No. 18 Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Oklahoma State Just Added A Familiar Name With Something To Prove
Braylin Presley is back in the picture for Oklahoma State after a winding college path that took him from Stillwater to Tulsa and now back to the Cowboys. The former OSU player and Tulsa standout has been granted a fifth year of eligibility, giving him a chance to return to the program that first brought him into the Big 12 spotlight.
The move comes as Presley and several other athletes continue to challenge the NCAAs new age-based eligibility rule in court, and that legal fight has kept his status in motion. For now, though, his return still appears to be in limbo on the school side, since he has not yet been formally announced by Oklahoma State and was not on the teams electronic roster Sunday evening. Oklahoma State Suddenly Has A Recruiting Chance Fans Should Notice
Oklahoma States fast start this season has given Eric Morris and his staff a little extra momentum on the recruiting trail, and they have not been shy about using it. The Cowboys have been active scouting high school talent and extending offers, with the uptick in attention creating a real opening for the program to get in earlier and more aggressively on players who might not have had them on the radar before.
One of the names worth monitoring is three-star wide receiver Tay Ellis, who has drawn interest as Oklahoma State pushes to build on its early-season success. Ellis has already been invited to campus, and the fact that he remains available in a crowded recruiting picture gives the Cowboys a chance to make a stronger impression while the season is still providing them with a selling point.
