Steve Lutz Saw The Same Oklahoma State Problem He Hates

Oklahoma State Coach Steve Lutz sounds off on defensive lapses following a challenging exhibition loss to New Mexico, pinpointing key areas for improvement.

Steve Lutz didn’t need a perfect first exhibition from Oklahoma State. He needed a sign that the defensive work from the offseason and fall had started to show up.

Instead, the Cowboys gave him a mess.

Oklahoma State fell 99-89 to New Mexico on Sunday at Gallagher-Iba Arena, and for Lutz the final margin was almost beside the point. What bothered him was everything that fed into it, especially the defensive breakdowns he’s spent months trying to fix.

“We’ve talked ad nauseum about last year’s difficulties defensively, and that if we didn’t fix those then we weren’t going to be able to get where we wanted to get this year,” he said. “For us to come out and foul 33 times, allow them to shoot 48 free throws and allow a young man who's a darn good player to get 31 on our home floor is inexcusable and we have to do better.”

That “young man” was New Mexico’s Jake Hall, who finished with 31 points, knocked down six 3-pointers and looked every bit like one of the best players in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos, who made the NCAA Tournament last season and are viewed as the league favorites, took advantage of nearly every opening OSU gave them.

The free-throw line became a major problem for the Cowboys. New Mexico went 36-of-48 there and repeatedly punished OSU’s fouling. The Lobos also shot close to 50% from the field, hit 42% from beyond the arc and kept their turnovers to 12, a number that will almost certainly stand out when Lutz studies the film because turnovers usually start with defensive pressure.

Oklahoma State had some offensive answers, but not nearly enough to cover for the other end. The Cowboys shot 40% overall and just 26% from 3-point range.

Freshman guard Anthony Felesi led five OSU players in double figures with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Junior center Julius Halaifonua scored 16, while Luka Bogavac and Benjamin Ahmed added 13 apiece.

Oklahoma State Homecoming Clash With Colorado Carries One Frustrating Unknown

Oklahoma State already knows one of its biggest October stages in 2026, with the Big 12 locking in the Cowboys Top 25 meeting with Houston for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on Fox. Around that, the league has begun to piece together Week 8, and the conference slate already carries the feel of a busy one for teams trying to sort out fall visibility, television windows and game-day rhythms.

What remains hanging over Stillwater is the homecoming date with Colorado, a matchup that has enough profile to draw attention but not enough certainty yet to settle the calendar. Seven Big 12 games in that week are sitting on six-day holds and will be finalized Sunday, leaving Oklahoma State and its fans waiting a little longer for the exact time and network that will frame the Cowboys visit from the Buffaloes. Caleb Hawkins Could Help Oklahoma State Land Another Playmaker

Caleb Hawkins has already made himself one of Oklahoma States most important offensive additions this season, giving the Cowboys a homegrown presence after transferring from North Texas. Back near his hometown and high school roots, Hawkins has become the teams leading rusher in both yards and touchdowns, a steady sign that the move has worked out for player and program alike.

Now theres a familiar name drawing interest on the recruiting side. Oklahoma State has shown attention to a versatile uncommitted athlete with ties to Hawkins, and the staffs evaluation has only added another layer to the connection. For a Cowboys offense looking to keep adding playmakers, that family link could make this one worth watching a little longer. [Read more 🡒]

Oklahoma States Early Success Keeps Pointing Back To Two Standouts

Oklahoma States win over UCF brought another round of league recognition, with linebacker Ethan Wesloski and kicker Sam Keltner both earning Big 12 weekly honors. Wesloski was named Defensive Player of the Week after piling up 17 tackles, matching his career high, while Keltner took Special Teams Player of the Week after knocking through two field goals.

The bigger picture for the Cowboys is just as encouraging. Wesloski and Keltner have each collected three weekly awards this season, the most of any conference player, and Oklahoma State now owns 11 Big 12 weekly honors overall, tops in the league. For a team getting early traction, the constant refrain keeps coming back to the same two names. [Read more 🡒]
