No. 6 Oregon walked into Boone Pickens Stadium with the shine of a national-title contender, and walked out with a 39-31 loss to unranked Oklahoma State that put a hard dent in the Ducks’ superteam buzz.
The result hit even harder because of what Oklahoma State had looked like only a week earlier. The Cowboys were beaten at Tulsa in Eric Morris’ first game as head coach, their offense stuck in the mud and their outlook under a microscope. Saturday was a different story entirely.
Drew Mestemaker was the engine. The Oklahoma State quarterback outplayed Oregon’s Dante Moore, throwing for 317 yards and two touchdowns while adding 109 yards and another score on the ground.
Moore, one of the top 2027 NFL Draft prospects, started slowly and never fully found his rhythm. He was 5 of 15 for 45 yards in the first half, then finished 14 of 29 for 191 yards and two touchdowns.
The win snapped Oklahoma State’s 12-game losing streak and was the program’s first victory since Aug. 28, 2025, when it beat UT Martin in its season opener. It also marked the first time a team had ended a losing streak of 10 or more games against an opponent ranked in the Associated Press top 10.
“Everybody counted them out, told them how bad they were,” Morris said, with his voice quivering. “Proud of those kids.”
Later, when ESPN reporter Taylor McGregor asked Morris what stood out about the moment, he said, “I don’t know if I can top this,” Morris said. “I’m not gonna retire, but I might think about it tonight.”
Oregon’s problems started early and never really went away. Under new coordinator Drew Mehringer, after Will Stein left to become Kentucky’s head coach, the Ducks opened with five empty possessions, including three straight three-and-outs.
The passing game eventually showed life, with Moore connecting on touchdowns to Dakorien Moore and Evan Stewart, but the offense remained uneven. The run game never got rolling, and Moore was sacked four times.
The Ducks had a chance to answer late, trailing by five with about seven minutes left, but the possession unraveled fast. Two Moore throws nearly became interceptions, then a short pass to Da’Jaun Riggs left Oregon facing fourth-and-8 from its own 33.
Dan Lanning chose to go for it, but the play seemed to be cut close on time, the snap came with the play clock nearly gone, and Moore rolled right into a dead end before throwing incomplete. That turned it over on downs.
Oklahoma State finished the job on the next possession. Oregon, now down eight, fumbled, the Cowboys recovered, and the clock melted away. The Ducks’ final three possessions produced no points.
It was Oregon’s first loss to an unranked opponent in the Dan Lanning era. The Ducks’ previous loss to an unranked team came on Oct. 2, 2021, when Mario Cristobal was still in charge.
For Oklahoma State, the turnaround was dramatic. The Cowboys looked nothing like the group that was pushed around by Tulsa.
Mestemaker nearly scored on the game’s first snap, ripping off a 75-yard run before stepping out at the 2. Oklahoma State also survived two major swings - a pair of deflected balls, one of which became a pick six and another that was returned to the Oklahoma State 1 - and kept attacking.
The balance was there, too. Caleb Hawkins carried 23 times for 110 yards and gave the Cowboys a steady presence on the ground. Wyatt Young added five catches for 121 yards and came through with several big plays.
Mestemaker, Hawkins and Young are among 19 players who transferred to Oklahoma State from North Texas, following Morris and several coaches after they went 12-2 and reached the American Conference Championship Game last year. The Cowboys brought in 92 new players this offseason.
Mestemaker’s performance matched the buzz around him. He led the FBS in passing last season with 4,379 yards and entered the year as the most important addition in Oklahoma State’s top-25 transfer class. He has also drawn first-round draft buzz, and he backed it up with a 10-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter that gave Oklahoma State the lead for good.
For Oregon, the takeaway is blunt: there’s work to do. The Ducks survived a scare against Boise State at home last week, but Saturday was far messier.
With two new coordinators and a roster loaded with talent, the transition has not been smooth. The offensive line, the run game and Moore all need to improve if Oregon is going to chase a Big Ten title or matter deep into the postseason.
For Oklahoma State, it was a clean reversal of a bleak stretch. After back-to-back winless Big 12 seasons and Mike Gundy’s firing, Morris and the Cowboys took plenty of heat after the Tulsa loss. Beating Oregon doesn’t erase that, but it changes the conversation in a hurry.
