Oklahoma State Turned A Shaky Start Into A Statement Win

Oklahoma State's explosive second-half performance and record-setting plays overturned a first-half deficit to dominate Colorado.

STILLWATER - Oklahoma State turned a close game into a runaway after halftime, burying Colorado 57-24 on Saturday night behind a huge passing night, a record-setting performance from Sam Keltner, and a defense that completely shut the door in the second half.

The Cowboys piled up 598 yards of offense and 28 first downs, while Colorado was held to 120 yards after the break. Oklahoma State outscored the Buffaloes 34-0 in the second half to pull away.

Keltner’s five field goals were a school record, and they also pushed him to 18 straight makes, tying Matt Amendola for the top spot in program history.

Caleb Hawkins gave Oklahoma State a steady ground presence with 120 rushing yards, and Mestemaker finished with 386 passing yards and four touchdown throws. The Cowboys had been forced to settle for Keltner field goals of 47, 30 and 41 yards in the first half as drives stalled, but that changed quickly after intermission.

Colorado had carried a 24-23 lead into halftime, powered by Isaac Wilson’s 222 passing yards and two touchdown passes. He also ran for a score, and on the stat sheet the Buffaloes were right there after two quarters.

Then came the first snap of the third quarter, and the game flipped. Wilson fumbled on a keeper, safety Quinton Hammonds recovered at the Colorado 24, and two plays later Mestemaker found tight end Morgan McPhaul on a 3-yard touchdown pass. Oklahoma State had the lead for good.

From there, the Cowboys kept pressing. They forced a punt, then marched 78 yards for another score to stretch the margin to 37-24. Hawkins sparked that drive with a 39-yard run and a 17-yard catch.

Colorado moved the ball well in the first half, but the second half was a different story. The Buffaloes punted four times and turned it over three times after halftime. For Oklahoma State, homecoming ended the way it wanted: with a blowout win and a second half that belonged entirely to the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State Finally Looks Dangerous Again But One Problem Still Lingers

After two seasons that left Oklahoma State searching for traction, Saturdays win over Colorado offered a much cleaner picture of what this team can be. The Cowboys had already surpassed their combined win total from the previous two years, and the victory felt significant not just for the record book but for the way it came together, with Drew Mestemaker, Caleb Hawkins and Justin Bowick all turning in the kind of performances that can carry a team when the schedule tightens.

The lingering issue is still hard to ignore, though. Oklahoma States defense wobbled in the first half before finally finding a turning point early in the third quarter, and if the Cowboys are going to keep building on this momentum, they will need that side of the ball to be steadier from the opening whistle instead of relying on timely swings to change the game. Oklahoma State Forced Colorado To Face A Much Bigger Problem

The Colorado Buffaloes skid deepened in Week 8 with a 57-24 loss to Oklahoma State, their fifth straight defeat, but Joseph Williams still gave them one of the few bright spots on a rough afternoon. The receiver turned in a career game with nine catches for 135 yards, giving Colorado a needed spark even as the Cowboys kept the pressure on and forced the Buffaloes to keep chasing the game.

Williams pointed to the way the second half unraveled as the bigger issue, with penalties and the inability to put together a full four quarters once again costing Colorado. Even with the losses piling up, he said he still believes in what the team can become, which makes the frustration all the more obvious for a group still searching for a complete performance. Oklahoma State Just Made The Top 25 Debate A Lot Louder

Oklahoma State turned in one of its most complete performances of the season in a 57-24 win over Colorado, with quarterback Drew Mestemaker piling up 386 passing yards and four touchdowns. Caleb Hawkins added a strong night on the ground with 120 rushing yards, while also contributing as a receiver, and the Cowboys found another gear defensively after halftime with key plays from Jerry Lawson, LaDainian Fields and Ethan Wesloski.

Even with that kind of statement win, the ranking picture still lagged behind the performance on the field. Oklahoma State remained outside the USA Today Coaches Poll Top 25 and was waiting on the latest AP Top 25 update, leaving plenty of room for debate about where the Cowboys should land after a weekend that reshaped the national conversation.
