Oklahoma State Suddenly Has A QB Hype Train Fans Can't Ignore

David Pollack's bold prediction pushes Oklahoma State's Drew Mestemaker to the forefront of future NFL Draft discussions.

David Pollack is betting big on Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker.

The former ESPN College GameDay analyst went as far as putting the former walk-on at No. 1 overall in the 2027 NFL Draft, saying on the Brandon Walker College Football Show that Mestemaker would already be viewed as the top pick if he carried a more famous last name.

“If Drew Mestemaker’s last name was Manning, he would already be projected as the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft this year,” Pollack said.

Pollack wasn’t just talking up the quarterback. He also picked Oklahoma State to finish ahead of defending Big 12 champion Texas Tech, calling the league “the most competitive conference, top to bottom,” while pushing back against Josh Pate’s idea that the Big 12 may be overrated.

“I do not believe what I’m seeing from Texas Tech. I can’t buy into this inconsistency on offense,” Pollack said.

“Give me the Cowboys, bro. I know they lost to Tulsa.

I get it.”

That Tulsa loss is the one blemish Pollack had to address. Oklahoma State opened the season with a 24-10 defeat, and Mestemaker finished that game 29 of 49 for 241 yards with two interceptions.

Pollack pointed to the missed opportunities around him, saying, “If you watched the game, they had four fourth-down conversions that they missed. They turned the ball over several times,” Pollack said.

Since then, Mestemaker has piled up 1,030 passing yards and 10 touchdowns across three wins. His best performance came in a 39-31 upset of then-No.

6 Oregon, when he threw for 317 yards and ran for 109 more to help snap Oklahoma State’s 21-game losing streak against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. He followed that with another huge day, passing for 389 yards and three touchdowns in a 41-24 win at West Virginia.

“I see so much greatness in that kid,” Pollack said.

Mestemaker’s rise has been a winding one. The Austin native didn’t open as the starter at Vandegrift High School, then walked on at North Texas in 2024. He led the nation with 4,379 passing yards in 2025 before following coach Eric Morris to Stillwater, and this is his first season of draft eligibility.

The draft buzz isn’t universal, though it is real. The Athletic’s Dane Brugler ranked Mestemaker fourth among 2027 quarterback prospects in August, trailing Notre Dame’s CJ Carr, Oregon’s Dante Moore and Texas’ Arch Manning. Brugler had Fernando Mendoza in that same fourth spot before the 2025 season, and the Las Vegas Raiders later took Mendoza No. 1 overall in April.

Brugler’s top-50 big board has Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith at No. 1 and Manning at No. 3. Pollack called Smith the best player in college football earlier this week, but he still believes the 6-foot-3 Oklahoma State quarterback belongs at the front of the 2027 draft class.

Oklahoma State gets back on the field Saturday at noon ET against UCF on ESPN2, with the Cowboys sitting at 3-1 and 1-0 in the Big 12 after a bye. Morris inherited a team that went 1-11 in 2025, and Texas Tech’s trip to Stillwater on Nov. 14 will give Pollack’s Big 12 pick a direct head-to-head test.

UCF Heads Into A Trickier Oklahoma State Test Than Fans Realize

Oklahoma States quick rise under new coach Eric Morris has changed the feel around Stillwater in a hurry. After a 1-11 season a year ago, the Cowboys are 3-1 and ranked No. 18, with Morris putting his stamp on the program through an offense-first approach and a defense that has leaned on solid, fundamental tackling.

Even with the fast start, there are still some rough edges Morris has been trying to smooth out in practice. Turnovers and third-down production remain part of the conversation, which is why this team feels a little trickier than its record might suggest, especially for an opponent like UCF that is walking into a much more confident Oklahoma State than the one fans saw last fall. Oklahoma State Faces One Big Offensive Question Against UCF

Oklahoma State gets its first home Big 12 game of the season Saturday when UCF comes to Boone Pickens Stadium for an 11 a.m. kickoff, and the Cowboys are riding a three-game winning streak into a matchup that should tell plenty about where they stand early in league play. The 3-1 start has kept things steady in Stillwater, and with UCF making its first trip to town, the opening act on the home conference schedule comes with a little extra weight.

One of the bigger offensive questions centers on wide receiver Wyatt Young, who is listed as questionable but is expected by coach Eric Morris to be available. Young gave Oklahoma State a major lift against West Virginia, and his presence would matter for a passing game that could use as many reliable targets as it can get with both teams carrying multiple names on the injury report. Oklahoma State Faces One Big Offensive Concern Entering UCF

Oklahoma State heads into its meeting with UCF trying to keep a winning streak alive, and the Cowboys at least got one encouraging update on the offensive side this week. Head coach Eric Morris said wide receiver Wyatt Young is expected to play and be at full strength, a welcome sign for a unit that wants to keep building momentum as the Knights come to town.

The bigger question sits up front, where offensive lineman Johnny Dickson III is practicing but still not fully recovered. Oklahoma State does have options if he cannot go, with Desmond Magiya among the depth pieces available and Braydon Nelson also in the mix for a return, but the line remains the one area worth watching as the Cowboys try to protect the offense's rhythm.
